I searched for threads on books and reading recommendations and didn't find any (though my Luddite tech skills may have made me miss them) so I thought I'd start one

 

What are you reading right now?

 

I'm pretty omnivorous as a reader, grabbing everything from pulp mystery to poetry to Renaissance Drama to sci-fi if it crosses my path. At the moment I'm reading Neil Gaiman's American Gods for the sixth or seventh time. It just gets better.

I recently finished reading the five (large) book series "A Song of Ice and Fire" which led to the HBO television series "A Game of Thrones" by George RR Martin and it is excellent reading. If you like adult fantasy and are prepared to take your visual cues from the written word then this is your cup of tea. I found the books more graphic than the four seasons I watched on DVD. The books are the perfect escape!!

If you enjoy MMA and in particular women's MMA which is now in the forefront "My Fight/Your Fight' by Ronda Rousey (former UFC Bantamweight Champion) is a good read. She will be back!!

Two good mysteries by my favourite authors. Michael Connelly & Robert Crais.

In the last few months I've read several non fiction and a few fiction. The fiction was the "Power of the dog" and "The Cartel" both by Don Winslow. They are about the drug wars in Mexico and read like a documentary of actual events but with a fictionalized back story. Really good!

 

Non fiction recently read were Heretic by Hirsi Ali about the need for a Muslim reformation. Also read "The Shallows: What the Internet is doing to our brains" by Nicholas Carr. The title pretty much sums up the subject matter. I'm currently half way through "A Troublesome Inheritence" by Nicholas Wade which controversially addresses ongoing human evolution and race and social behaviours distinct to those societies. He makes the point that there is no superior race right out of the gate but also suggests our differences may not just be cultural. Judgement reserved til I'm finished reading it.

 

Next up is "Rewire" by Richard O'Connor and it's about changing your brain to break bad habits, destructive behaviours, procrastination, etc.

 

I love to read!

Edit: I just realized I have a copy of American Gods sitting unread on my shelf. Sounds like I should dust it off?

If you like those by Winslow read savages & Kings of Cool. Savages was made into a pretty good movie.

On a bit of a Bernard Cornwell kick after watching The Last Kingdom on Netflix:

 

The Last Kingdom

A really neat look at the goings-on in what's now England, when the Danes very nearly took the whole place over back in about 900 AD. I have the first three books in the series; partway through this one so far. Cornwell writes with a lean, descriptive, engaging style.

 

Waterloo: The History of Four Days, Three Armies and Three Battles

'Cause hey! Why not read Cornwell's only non-fiction history. This one is well balanced between historical depth and a quick pace... but is strangely repetitive in times, like it needed one more pass by an editor ("uh, Bernard, you made this exact point two pages ago.")
