Catholic School Children (Breeding Rebels one day at a Time!)

Recommended Posts

As I meet more people considered to be "deviant" in our society (sex workers, leftist-hippie-anarchist activists, people doing sexual health education, queer-identified folks) I am realizing that a lot of these people went to Catholic schools when growing up.

This is hilarious! I trace back my tendencies to resist authority and challenge the status quo to when I was a kid and would be kicking the seat of the person in front of me while being forced to attend mass, and to call bullshit during my religion classes when talking about things like abortion, and putting on sex-positive/queer positive assemblies in my all-girl-catholic-high school (and almost being suspended for this!).

It seems that, in my experience at least, Catholic schools breed rebels/ "deviants"/ aka awesome people!

So, how many of you attended Catholic schools and did this shape the kind of person you are and the kinds of activities you like to do? If so, did you turn out to be a "rebel" in the eyes of the Catholic school system?

Share and laugh away!

xoxo

I went to a Lutheran Boarding school. At that time I already wasn't Christian but I always enjoyed morning service. I loved seeing so many people united in their faith worshiping their higher power. I don't agree with Christianity but I don't have a problem with Christians. My school was quite strict but I enjoyed the structure, structure has always been something I have craved and desired.

For sure! I am referring more to the irony that most of the people who I've met who are doing thongs that the church wouldn't necessarily approve of came

From the catholic school system!

Lol, I was never Catholic, but I used to be a fundamental Baptist(0_0)! Way worse! Anyway, the enforcement of someone else's strict 'holier than thou' standards seems to breed a very pronounced strain of 'deviance,' lol. Now, the whole world seems puritan to me:icon_twisted:!

Myself, I went to a normal school (tongue in cheek here)

I went to regular public school, and secondary school, and then Carleton University.

During my schooling years (secondary and university) I was a rebel, only because I was a small c conservative in outlook, and in the minority, while most students and professors (in university that is) were of left wing leanings (be it NDP, Marxist Leninist, some Communist)

According to mainstream society I'd be normal, but in university circles, I was the rebel

Yes, I went to various Catholic schools in Canada and one of them being an all girls school. The last high school that I graduated from, we wore uniforms. I still have it!! Haha! My other sisters went to Catholic schools where they didn't have to wear one.

I don't think being in a Catholic school shaped who I was as a person but Catholic schools have a much more difficult curriculum and I feel I received a good education compared to public schools. School that have a religious cirriculum in place are not without their faults. My sister pulled her daughter out of a Catholic school last year as her teacher told his students that they would all be going to hell. Nice.lol. She is now in a public school and the workload is a lot more relaxed.

Yes, being in a Catholic school was definitely structured and I don't necessarily think it had anything to do with being a rebel or not... perhaps just going through the motions of being a teenager. I was a goody too shoes until the age of 13 when I went through a period of getting in fights with other girls once pushing one inside a locker and leaving her there.lol. I still have feistiness in me though. ;)

Whether it is coincidental or ironic that I went to a Catholic school and then becoming an SP, I will always be somewhat of a rebel anyways. :)

Very interesting thread Sky. I was brought up Anglican, which is a laid back kind of religion. It did not play much of a part in forming who I am. I attribute that to my friends in high school and my 3 older brothers. I think the teenage years to mid-twenties are the most critical time in shapeing who you are/will be.

I attended a Catholic high school, despite not being Catholic. The faculty was mixed with either adoring me, or despising me. I was the first kid in school to get a visible tattoo, and to get a visible piercing. They tried to force me into hiding the tattoo and removing the piercing, but when I started spouting out real reasons why they couldn't they eventually relented.

My most hilarious Catholic school memories were when we were taught about sex. We were taught the 'natural family planning method'. OH MAN my class was groaning/laughing at me every 30 seconds when I raised my hand to disprove everything the guy was trying to tell us. Best part was when, he said 'A man should only spill his seed for purposes of procreation'. So I said 'But sir, why would we then need natural family planning? By your own rules, a man should only have intercourse with his wife when he's planning on impregnating her'. His face turned so red and he stormed out of class. Aaaaah that felt good. Fucker tried telling my class that masturbation and all forms of birth control were murder.

Reading these comments just reminds me again how pre-occupied all religions seem to be with sex. Whether its birth control, homosexuality, pre-marital, etc the churches expend huge amounts of time on the subjects.

Why don't we here more about war from these groups? What about social injustice, economic exploitation, enviromentalism (as I recall from my religious days we're suppossed to be good stewards of gods creation)?

Maybe I'm being unfair but it just seems to me they're even more obsssesed than we are about sex.

I went to public school (except for a three year stint from gr. 4-6 in a Montessori).

I'm not sure how I turned into the rebel that I am, but it didn't have anything to do with rebelling against religion :)

Even though I was not raised Catholic, my grandparents were strict Irish Catholic.

They wanted me raised as such, and snuck me into church at least once a month. I hated being in the Catholic Church, it made me uncomfortable. I knew I did not belong there.

My parents tried to raise me to be a "Good Christian". But I did not belong there either.

To this day, I do not believe I belong in one religion alone. I have many beliefs I know differ from anyone else I have ever met. I am a morally driven person.

I help animals in need, and kids in need. I have helped homeless, and starving people my whole life. I will help and elderly person carry groceries, or hold the door for people at Timmies!

This is just my opinion, and not meant to offend any ones religion.

In an article on inside sex workers it states that 53% of those interviewed were raised as Catholics.

ha ha ... Catholics are attracted by the confessional. Protestants keep their mouths shut and refuse to be interviewed.

I'm assuming this article wasn't researched in India ...
