We recently had some feedback on Twitter that the term "hobbyist" isn't particularly liked within this community. So, clients and providers, what are your thoughts?

That is a very good point and one I hadn't thought of before!

The problem is not the word itself, but more the negative connotation associated with men paying for adult services. As long the industry is perceived as taboo and the general population remains hypocritical, no single word will make a change.

I don't mind it, but I do find it somewhat surreal that it would be considered a hobby.  The same way that I found it surreal that there's guys who have sex with hot women on camera for a living.

I used to see SPs on my lunch break and I'd tell my coworkers that I was going to an appointment. I guess that was technically true, but nevertheless it would be nice if I could be completely open about it.

The same could be said about all facets of the adult industry. Just being a "manager" is normally seen as a positive thing for any business. But the moment it's connected to the adult industry, all the negative stereotypes emerge even if no evidence of exploitation or deception is present. Even on friendly environments like this board, being "under management" is often unfairly portrayed as a negative.

Sometimes it's just better to live with the secrecy of a secret hobby or occupation, than trying to change old preconceptions.

I've heard some pretty bad names...

Hobbiest by far is the nicest and most socially accepted. Much better than being called a sex addict or much worse.

But, I refer to gentlemen I've met as buddies or clients.

Lol. Those gentleman that DO see any new girl that comes to town, normally gets a 'stamp collector' tag in my books. Not necessarily a bad thing, but there are many different types/styles of "hobbiests.'

I love getting to know humans, that's the first thing I normally ask when having a meeting with someone... how they conduct their actions.

Some enjoy quick one offs, others want the new girls, some stick to one girl they enjoy and never test the waters again, some require a fetish dispenser, others want something closer to Sugaring. Theres so many different personalities and reasons for seeing providers that one word cant nearly describe everyone.

I tend to think of myself as a client. Just like I'm a client of my local garage where I go to get an oil change..... :)

I also enjoy developing a 'servcie provider' 'client' relationship so I don't treat it like one of hobbies.

And to help convince folks that I only occupy myself with the world's truly great problems, lol, I view the word as 'hobbyist' :)

https://sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?101147-quot-Hobbyist-quot-v-quot-Hobbiest-quot

My years fo editing leave me cringing over spelling and grammar.... you know, things like pervasive use of the possessive 'your' when what was meant was you're..... it makes reading something smooth and effortless.

Singed, a man with many problems lol

I do enjoy getting my... erm.... oil changed as well  😉

Honestly I've never had an issue with the term hobbiest. It's tactful and subtle.  If an outsider heard you say it,  they wouldn't automatically know what you were referring to.  "Client" is so clinical and "John" is so bad eighties cop drama. Besides,  it kind of is my hobby.  Not just the dates,  but the research,  this site,  my Twitter feed,  all of it.  It keeps me occupied.  And it's way more fun than stamp collecting 😉

Motorcycles,  guitar, and service providers. Those are my current hobbies. And I love them all!

I'm not fond of hobbyist. Client is a good general purpose word for a person purchasing a service, which is what we're doing.

Not so sure about the word "Hobbyist" but one thing is for sure is that what we do is not a "Hobby" to me, I prefer to call it a "Lifestyle" so what would be the word for a person living a "Lifestyle" is it a "Stylist" or a "Lifestylist"?

Actually, thinking a bit more about this... my problem with 'hobbyist' is that I think it trivializes the people we meet, and that's not a good thing. They're people, not just something you collect.

Not all hobbies are about collecting.  The definition is:

"an activity done regularly in one's leisure time for pleasure"

So the word does apply and can be respectful as long women(and men) are not treated like objects. And as the term is only used in closed circles, it doesn't really matter what word is used as long we understand each other.

In my opinion as a Trans SP.😊

A Client is someone who is generally interested in forming a  traditional client SP relationship with a provider and sees them regularly (when they can), because they like them for the person they are as well as attracted to them.

A Hobbyist is someone who just wants to try each SP once just to say they've tried them and never build the typical client relationship. Most hobbyist tend to write reviews about each new person they see and tend to get an ego boost from them, from what I have experienced.

Anyone who has only seen me once and does not repeat is a hobbyist in my opinion (with the exclusion of people who just were not into me). I have actual clients who come to see me weekly in Toronto, I have others from Newfoundland to BC who text me when I am not even in the same city to see how I am doing, or they send me giftcards just as a gift even when they can't see me due to me being on tour or their schedules being busy, building this type of relationship with a client is more important to me than making money from several different strangers.

I like to know the person I am entertaining wants more to do with me than just my body, because after all, behind the profession SP's are human.❤️

Ooh that's a good one, and not one I've heard before! I'll be using that in our content going forward 😉

Ain't "SC" already used for "Silent Chuckle", "Sexual Content", "Sperm Count", "Snapchat", "Sport Center",... ?

Thank you for this explanation. I can definitely appreciate your perspective. I guess the difference for me is that I don't see the word hobbyist as being synonymous with "collector". (And I can see how the word would seem less than flattering if that is how you perceive it.)

A collection is certainly one type of hobby but it is only an example of one, not a definition of the word. (At least in my mind.) I consider myself a hobbyist because I dedicate a large portion of my free time into activities around this industry. I'm not only referring to the dates themselves (obviously I like that part) but also to the time I spend researching, talking with fellow hobbyists, getting to know the ladies, being interested in pro-sp causes, interacting on sites like this, following ladies on twitter, etc. The list goes on.

I do have several ladies I have met over the years that I repeat with regularly. I likely never would have met them without the "hobby" part. I also likely would never would have met the caliber of ladies I have met without the hobby aspect by only choosing random people off LL or other such sites.

So I guess in my mind, when I'm actually seeing a lady, I'm a client. What I am doing right now as I sit here typing this (when I should actually be working), I do as part of my hobby if that distinction makes any sense.

Either way, thank you for your perspective. It certainly gives food for thought.

I don’t care what you want to be called as long as you respect my boundaries and booking protocol.
