One of the first (fictional) books I read about sex work was a graphic novel called Rent Girl by Michelle Tea. Another good one related to the escort industry is Chester Brown's Paying for It, which recounts the authors experiences with escorts in Toronto. Some of my other faves (non-sex work related) include: The Watchmen (big surprise!) Human Diastrophism (a big collection of the Love and Rockets books) The Boys by Garth Ennis Ones I haven't read but which are on my list to check out: The Walking Dead The Crow (just found out about this thanks to castle!) Annessa 22743 Report post Posted December 22, 2011 I just picked up Year One of the Frank Miller "Batman" for a cousin's boyfriend for christmas.....but I havent been able to put it down....I will probably be done it by Christmas in time to wrap it hehe Now i wanna check out Michelle Tea's Rent Girl! Robert Kirkman is one evil bastard when it comes to how he treats his characters! The Crow - Very different from the movie, but a good time nonetheless Some other Suggestions: Locke and Key by Joe Hill - The whole premise behind the keys and the secrets they carry hooked me something fierce! Invincible, Tech Jacket, and The Astounding Wolfman, all by Robert Kirkman - These aren't your older brother's super hero comics. Not by a long shot! Once again, Kirkman puts his characters through the wringer time and time again. Preacher by Garth Ennis - A small town preacher loses his faith and takes up a quest to find god and bring him to account for his actions. Loads of fucked up shit in this one. V for Vendetta - Another Graphic novel that is quite different from the film. Not for everybody, but I found it was an enjoyable read. Dr. McNinja by Christopher Hastings - Originally a webcomic, it's now been released in graphic novel format. If you like Year One you should check out Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale's follow ups to that The Long Halloween which is a really interesting "who done it" kinda story. And Dark Victory which is Robin's origin story but told in a very serious and interesting way. I loved trying to guess who certain escorts might be. I just recently read Paying For It which was really interesting. I'll have to keep an eye out foor Rent Girl! And if you're looking for a copy of The Crow I'm pretty sure Silver Snail on Bank st has one that I've been eyeballing myself because my copy's pretty worn down. And I think Chapters on Rideau has one too. And for the Stephen King/Dark Tower fans out there Marvel's Dark Tower series is really interesting. Additional Comments: A few I want to read are From Hell, Road to Perdition, Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns and Dark Knight Strikes Again, I also want to finish off the Sin City series . I've only read Yellow Bastard so far. For the Garth Ennis fans I would recommend Punisher: Welcome Back Frank. It's twisted good fun. I found, like in Chester Brown's previous autobiographical comic book 'I Never Liked You', I can identify with Brown's thought process and personality. It was a really well constructed narrative that kept its focus. I liked 'I Never Liked You' better than 'Paying For It' because it was more touching. Even though it's about teenage years, I find I still pick it up from time to time and read it again and still love it. Unlike 'Ghost World' (both the comics and the movie). I still have great respect for what Clowes did with 'Ghost World', but I've found I have just outgrown it. Additional Comments: I also liked the 'Sin City' books. As far as Frank Miller goes, I also really like 'Hard Boiled', it's like a 'Where's Waldo' book of futuristic destruction. I pick it up frequently and just flip through and look at the art. I was wondering if any of you have read 'X'ed Out' by Charles Burns? I read 'Black Hole' by him and it was pretty good, but not great. I'd be willing to give him another try. In my opinion, you can probably skip the last 'Sin City' book 'To Hell And Back', it's by far the weakest. I liked all the other ones though. Definately get 'A Dame To Kill For'. I'll be looking for Rent Girl next. And Watchmen was awesome! The movie not so much. A good friend lent me the book just before the movie came out. The touchpoint for me was the sex scene: in the comic it's a beautiful shared moment between two awkward people who have been denying their attraction for too long; in the movie it's clearly just something tossed together by the director to earn a PG13 rating or whatever.
