'Virus-killing condoms' to be sold by Australian firm

A new make of condom capable of "killing" sexually transmitted diseases has been approved by Australian regulators.

The prophylactics, which are expected to be released in a couple of months, use an antiviral nanotech compound called VivaGel to deactivate a range of STDs including HIV, herpes and human papilloma virus.

Although condoms protect against the spread of STDs, this would be the first that actively kills them.

Dr Jackie Fairley, the chief executive of the company which created VivaGel, said: â??Condoms are not 100 per cent effective in preventing either pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections and so anything that you can do to reduce the number of virus particles by inactivating them with a substance like VivaGel would reduce overall viral load."

In laboratory tests the lubricant gel which contains the active ingredient is shown to deactivate about 99.9 percent of HIV, herpes and human papilloma virus cases.

Starpharma, the Australian biotech firm which created the gel, is allying with Australian condom maker Ansell to produce the prophylactics.

The condoms are currently being assessed by the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for possible release in to the US market.

Although approved by Japanese regulators earlier this year, the STD-killing condoms will most likely come out in Australia first.

Ansell has global production and distribution rights outside of Japan, meaning that if other countries approve the product a worldwide release of the Australian condom line could follow.
