For the ladies: coming out of the closet

Recommended Posts

I just recently came out of the closet (so to speak) and admitted to my Mom that I was an escort and her response was, "well I'm glad you have a job and aren't really unemployed and that you have the confidence to take advantage of such a goldmine."

Since this was absolutely not the response I was expecting, I want to take a minute to count my blessings and appreciate the awesome parents that I have, since they have been so great about supporting me in everything that I choose to do.

Which brings me to my question: How many of the women here are open about their lifestyle/career choice and if your family knows, how do they feel about it?

Well, because I was worried about her reaction I'd been lying this past year about what I'd been up to and it was getting harder and harder to explain where I was getting my money. I figured, you know what, I'm not ashamed of this job, in fact, I'm proud of it and proud that I'm good at it and I thought, well she's my mom, she'll love me no matter what and I went with it. And it turned out pretty good, so I'm happy and relieved to have that weight off my shoulders.

My dad and brother know, they got a piece of the pie for a bit there, while the going was good. Mom has no idea, and I really don't feel it's necessary to let her know. My good friends, who I know love and support me no matter what, all know as well.

I was reading this book the other day about strippers (Stripping, Sex and Popular Culture by Catherine M. Roach) and so many of them weren't out to their families and it got me a' wonderin' about how many of us are open about our lives.

I'm glad to hear so far though that everyone seems to have loving support groups. It's definitely something you need in this biz.

Wow, you mom is one special lady, you are very lucky.

I only do this part time, and work full time in a male oriented buisness.

So it would not be ideal for me to come out of the closet.

Plus my dad would disown me

What does that mean exactly, "they got a piece of the pie for a bit there, while the going was good"? Just curious.

I helped them out with money for food, and things like that. Xmas gifts, stuff I knew they couldn't afford. Sorry if I made it sound like something else, which was not my intention in doing so:!:

I only have one family member left, and no they don't know. I would love to tell them but after the reaction I got when I mentioned I've posted nude for photos it's just not happening. And since said family member is 3000 miles away, I'm not too concerned.

I'm really glad to hear of families being supportive, it's a nice change.

It can be very rewarding passing on some of the good fortune with loved ones, the main fear they have is that it is drug money or organized crime proceeds. The options are to trickle a small amount, donate anonymously or tell them where the money came from. If you set them up properly they will be relieved it is not from criminal activity, and accept your kindness in the spirit it is intended.

I think it's important for parents to be supportive without encouraging and that's a very fine line most don't recognize so it sounds like your mother did a good job. :)

As for myself, well my individual circumstances are very different from yours so no my parents don't know about this job but there isn't really a need for them to. It's a job not a career choice, my career is different and they are well aware of it and are very proud of it and have always supported me in my career options.

They also know that I used to work as a stripper, that is in part how I made my way to my career and though they were not thrilled about it I was the only one of my siblings not not start my working years with school debts so they understood my choices and accepted them.

I do have a number of friends and colleagues that know I work as an escort, these are those in my close social network.

It's just that my parents aren't in that network and telling them would seem unnecessary and pointless for me. They have retired and are living a nice quiet life, telling them something like that would just cause them worry when right now they deserve to relax and enjoy what retirement has to offer.

That was one of the reasons I debated not telling my mother, her and my Dad are close to retirement and already worry enough about me, I didn't want to add fuel to the fire, but at the same time, I'm really really close with my Mom and really didn't like lying to her. Again, it came down to lying about how I was putting myself through school (another BA! woo!) and how I was still able to do things like go to Europe or buy a new laptop.

For me, lying goes completely against my being. I just couldn't do it anymore.
