How is "CERB" pronounced? ( A: Soft "c" like "SERB" )

Recommended Posts

Guest W***ledi*Time

How is the acronym "CERB" pronounced? Some SP's I have met say it with a soft-c ("serb"), and some pronounce it with a hard-c ("kerb").

Is there an "official" answer to this riddle? Or is this another one of life's messy grey areas?

Thanks, Wrinkled (and Puzzled)

Funny, I was having this conversation with a girl about this last night. Soft C 'serb' for me. If it was a hard C, then it would be curb like one you get kicked to. And I think the rules of english dictate that a word beginning with "Ce" makes it soft.

Same with me, soft 'C'.

It actually never struck me (before I saw this thread) that it could be pronounced differently...

Well... we run the site and we pronounce it with soft "c" but since the "C" stands for "Canadian" I could see why some would pronounce it as "kerb" due to the "Kan" sound the "C" is representing.

The thought of it being pronounced as "kerb" never crossed our minds here - we just always called it with a soft "c".

So the official pronounciation would be "serb" (soft 'c')

Thanks mod! And thanks everyone, looks like the official answer is also backed by the grassroots opinion from coast to coast. I'm happy again ...

well....I look at it as a "C" is a breast size.......and a breast is soft....supple...

besides if you use the "K" sound it is like you want to "CURB" you desire to meet the lovely ladies.........where as the "serb" sound is gentle...soft.....
