Porn free

Recently read an article about the future of the porn industry and it doesn't look good.

While porn is becoming more and more mainstream, it is also frequently pirated over the internet instead of purchased. As a result, it's becoming more difficult to make a decent living from porn, whether you act in it or produce it. It was stated by one well known actor that she can make more money from a "private session" or stripping, than for a scene! Several production companies have also gone out of business. Like a lot of businesses it needs to adapt or die, but what are it's options given the unlikelihood of counting on advertising revenues to save it in the near term.

How do you feel about this? Do you download your porn as opposed to purchasing it and would you ever pay for porn if you could download it free? What do you think the industry needs to do?

What do you think the industry needs to do?

Kink.com is a pretty large company that found it's niche and has grown tremendously. It's proof that people are willing to pay for it, as long as they appreciate the content.

There are some companies that are popping up that are actually trying to produce stuff that isn't just a typical "wham bam thank you ma'am" sort. Take a look at this article by the Globe and Mail.

I heard on the radio once that the backbone philosophy behind the iTunes store is that people do want to own the songs they listen to. But it has to be done with the consumer in mind.

While I may or may not have been a minor at the time, I noticed porn websites be one of the first in terms of accessibility, but the content was the same old stuff. Some in the porn industry understood that it's just not about looking pretty and lying on your back to make money, they've actually engaged viewers through different ways (blogs, twitter, reddit).

Basically, I think the smart ones will adapt (or are actually leading the way), while ones stuck in the 80s will die out from the industry.

Just some musings here but music, which used to arrive (and once again is arriving) on vinyl somehow made it through 8-tracks, cassettes, and CDs to the iTunes model.

Main-stream movies morphed through laser disks to VHS to DVDs to Blu-ray to various pay-downloads.

In each instance, there were and are free ways to get those products but those who would make money from those products have found ways to do it.

Porn has gone from grainy 8mm movies to X-Rated movie houses to VHS tapes to DVDs to the present online pay model.

Times will change and people who want to make money with porn will come up with the next great thing.

To address the OP question. No, I don't pay for porn, I know too many free sites. :)

Would I? Depends on what value-added they came up with. Speaking of which, whatever became of Smell-O-Vision?

We live in a society of instant gratification, which makes free sites and torrent downloading much more attractive than buying a movie or webcam time. As stated on one of my favorite TV shows, the Internet is an entire database of "naked bottoms", which means people are less likely to pay. I myself know plenty of free sites so paying for porn is a rare.

Well, I don't think I've paid for porn since the invention of the Internet. I imagine there's a lot of folks in the same boat.

I have heard - and I don't know how true this is - that many pornstars are also SPs on the side, or do cam-shows, or other things. And I'm wondering if this is the real future of the industry: the professional end of porn becoming, rather than a money-making venture in itself, a form of advertizing for other services that are profitable. A market for professionally-produced porn may well remain, but I can't see it remaining viable on its own merits... although I'm sure it'd be nice if people would occasionally pay to see your advertizing :)

The other side of the coin, of course, is amateur porn; I have no doubt that a lot of exhibitionists will continue to make and distribute this, will the usual variance in quality, and that they'll do it for free because they enjoy doing it. And who knows, perhaps some amateur performers will gain a sufficient following that they too can branch out and start to make an income out of it...

Thanks for the responses!

I should have said "pirated" porn, not free porn. In my opinion, everyone should be paid for their work.

Just as some will pay $500 an hour to see an SP and some hope to get it for free or somewhere nearer that end of the scale. I think you get what you pay for. If nobody wants to pay for porn eventually all that's left is the free stuff with nothing left to pirate.

Btw, There is an article on CERB recently that talks about an increase in malware on free porn sites. Could some of this be the industry fighting back?
