You are right about making regular backups.

 

It is also important to make them on removable media and kept off site -- you can't infect, burn or steal a backup if it isn't in the drawer next to the computer.

 

For your important files, burn them onto a DVD-R in "one time record" mode -- other than physically destroying the DVD, no one can infect or delete the files.
