In today's Globe and Mail we have the latest call for Canada to adopt the "Swedish Model" to fill the vacum created by the recent court ruling striking down provisions of the current laws regarding prostitution.

 

It seems to me that the Swedish Model will be the rallying cry for prohibitionists since it neatly marries anti-prostitution advocates on both the left and the right by aiming the "new" law at consumers (Johns/predators) rather than providers ( women/victims).

 

The Swedish law also has the political benefit of claiming to be all about the prevention of human trafficking (and who beside us evil Johns are in favour of that?) One wonders why cars, trains, boats, and airplanes haven't been outlawed in Sweden since they are key components in actual human trafficking.

 

Also is the benifit that the Model comes out of Sweden rather than the bible belt of the USA, so it appears to be more reasonable after all aren't the Swedes always more advanced then us socially:roll:.

 

It would good for the activists that want to keep prostitution safe and legal in some form to begin serious study of the "Swedish model" to find out its effects etc so as to offer an alternative.

You're right, Scott. That's the way the argument will likely unfold.

And yes, we need to identify the flaws in the Swedish model, since it will probably be trumpeted as the solution.

When it comes to the trafficking issue, I've never once heard a cry for more follow up on visa or work permit recipients working in Canada.

 

Example... Hello this is Mr Smith from imigration Canada, you arrived on a work permit as an exotic dancer 2 months ago to work for XYZ, we are concernd about the issue of human trafficking, how are things going every thing ok?

 

 

This would seem like a no brainer to me.
