fave lines to quote in conversation

Recommended Posts

I didn't really like the book much, but I love the phrase,

"I must grok it in fullness." or "I do not grok it."

It's from Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein and I use it all the time in conversation because I'm a science fiction nerd. Basically, to grok something means to understand it fully, take it in, absorb, etc.

ie

Hey Erin, did you like the newest Yeah Yeah Yeah's album?

I'm not sure how I feel about it yet, I haven't had time to grok it in fullness.

So what are your favourite lines to quote and use in conversation?

I didn't grok 'Stranger in a Strange Land' nor any of the Lazarus Long series either. My current fav quotes:

"The best way to predict the future is to invent it" - Alan Kay

and

Pareto's principle

"80% of the benefits come from 20% of the effort"

Heinlein had some interesting perspectives on gender and sexuality, if I recall correctly.

Erin, you are a very interesting character. I think we would have some things in common. It would be cool if we could meet and grok each other! Is there a line in there that says groking leads to .......:-P

One of my favorite lines I use when I'm in a group of hi-brows and someone is pontificating, I say "Wisdom lies not in the answering of questions but in the asking" Most of the time the offender just goe 'Huh?"

Lately I've been big into calling people "hoopy froods". It's just such an awesome sounding term, and hey - Douglas Adams is king, in my books.

This can be used by so many "Imagination is more important than knowledge"

Mark Twain, "Love is the desire to be irresistibly desired"

Mae West, "The curve is the loveliest distance between two points"

Jimmy Hendrix, "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace."

Mae West had a wonderfully quick wit, my fav line from here:

Adoring female fan: "Goodness, what lovely diamonds"

Mae West: "Goodness had nothing to with it dear"

one of my favorite lines is from the movie Risky Business......

"Josh......you have to learn to say ...what the fuck"

"saying "what the fuck" brings freedom"

"Freedom brings oportunity"

"and oportunity makes the future"

That was part of the reason I wasn't particularly fond of Stranger in a Strange Land; I had a hard time getting past the 50's mentality.

Yes, I love it! I think I might have to start using that phrase myself.

Haha, yes, we shall meet one day to grok each other in fullness and become water-brothers (sharing water is a big deal for the Martian in the book, and once you are water-brothers, making out is no big deal, LOL).
