securing a domain name?

Recommended Posts

Guest S****r

I am confused about securing a domain name. I am ready to create a website, but don't understand how to secure a domain name. I want to register it as "summertimefun.com" Can anyone help me out with this? When I try to google info on it, I get high prices, and everyone tell me it shouldn't cost that much. If I can get past this hurtle, I can get a site online.

Somebody.....help the girl!

Any and all help greatly appreciated!

Thanks so much!

Go to Go Daddy.com to register the domain name if it is not taken yet!

Unfortunately summertimefun.com does appear to be taken already. There are people that register all common domain names (if not already taken) then wait for somebody to buy them. It only costs about 9 bucks a year to hold a domain name so if you can get a few hundred or thousand dollars from someone that wants to develop it, it can be a money maker.

Your best bet is to look for something not taken already, i don't like paying people to squat on domain names. For instance both sensuousSummer.com and sensous-summer.com seem available.

But if your bent on summertimefun.com you'll just have to haggle with whoever has it registered.

summertimefun.ca is available though. Getting a domain is really easy. Do you know what you plan to do with hosting? Most hosts will also sell domain names.

A few points:

1. Some hosting companies will not allow "Pornographic" material and would consider an escort site to fall under that category. They could pull your site without return of money (You would not lose the domain name, just the hosting and would have to find another hosting and transfer your domain.) based on their policies.

2. There are a bunch of new domain extensions coming up in 2013. (So instead of .com or .ca there are about a 1000 new ones up for grabs. So you could perhaps get summertimefun.xxx or something like that. For more info and a list see http://www.newgtldsite.com/new-domain-extensions-2013/

Most web hosting companies will do all the work for you when it comes to domain name registration. So many do I would not bother with one that does not. If they allow "adult only" material just ask if they take care of domain name registration. Most do and just add a charge to your bill for their cost of registering the name.

No matter what though, in the name of all silicon goodness, never, ever, and to stress it just a little more -never, use Go Daddy.

Yes, have to agree with you there... I've had to make formal complaints against them several times to get matters resolved for people. Of course as soon as they have to respond to such a complaint (and only have so long to do it or else) they always end up seeing it your way "just this once" and quickly.

Other people like them :) YMMV

I have to agree with the last two post. Many people that I know have had problems with godaddy.

When I started my own site, I simply picked a hosting site and for an additional cost they registered my domain. It was pretty simple. There are so many hosting sites out there and the cost is relatively low.

Also, look into how much storage you are allowed and how much you are allowed to upload and/or download. These may be additional charges or apart of a package deal. Some hosting sites will offer deals or have "sales".

It's similar to the question "which cellphone provider to go with?"

Feel free to PM me if you want to know which host I am with.

Good luck with your search!
