Story Ideas about Escorting (good press for the industry)

Recommended Posts

It's been just over a week since my retirement and I am adjusting to normal life pretty well. There are certain people I miss with all my heart and soul (you know who you are). But I needed to follow my heart (and biological clock) LOL and leave the industry to be with the man that I love. The biggest adjustment for me is not having unlimited money to spend any way I want anymore. LOL It is also difficult to attempt to adjust my sleep patterns to normal 9 to 5.

I'm thinking about doing some anonymous writing about the escort business - with complete discretion for every single human being I have ever met (both clients and fellow escorts). I have much to lose should my family or children ever learn about my past work as an escort ... and I guarantee/promise that same respect/discretion to everyone I know.

I'd like to pitch some creative story ideas to a few Canadian publications and was wondering if anyone had any great story ideas other than these ones I have already thought of:

  • A Day in the Life of an Escort
  • Sex Secrets of an Escort
  • Why Men Hire Escorts
  • Why Women Become Escorts

As well, I'm wondering if anyone would be comfortable being interviewed (either publicly or under a disguised name) should any publication pick up the story ideas I pitch.

Thanks,

Mandalay

If you need any content, please feel free to contact me. I have been at this full and part-time for 15 years. I worked in B.C., Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and did a short tour in New York State. I have worked for agencies, independently and I must confess even did a short stint on the streets.

I have seen the good and the bad of this industry and have learned a lot about myself and others. I'm sure in the short time you were an escort, you experienced mostly positive things, but this industry can be very bad for some, depending on the decisions and lifestyle they choose.

If there is one thing I learned is, treat others the way you want to be treated.

Good luck with finding a publisher interested in this.

there have been many days when I lay my head down for the evening with my head-wheels turning saying "geez I should write a book, this stuff is too good!" lol. I've often thought about writing an anonymous blog, but whos gonna read it unless you refer someone to it? (that might make the grace of being anonymous be obsolete.

every time I feel alienated I pick up a refered book on the industry written in the first person by a working girl. reading those novels makes me feel like I'm comparing my experiences and if its written well (or truly by someone who really does know what they're talking about) I feel a sense of fulfilment and pride that if someones similar experiences were valid enough to make it to paperback for $24 a copy, then someone had to believe in their motions for their story.

I support you fully in any literature you put out there. I am only going on 2 years of working in this industry but if you want any verbal mish-mash from this end, let me know and I'll be happy to contribute in any way i can

Thank you Anessa and Angela. I'll let you know how the story pitches go.

My significant other, daughter and I might be going to Ottawa in the next couple of weeks.

It would be wonderful to meet with the both of you for drinks if it is possible to work around all of our schedules. You both seem like such amazing women and it would be great to have friends in Ottawa for when I visit. I also think that it would be great to meet before I write about you.

I've been in Toronto for four days now and am a little lonely (not in a sexual way ... lol ... just a wholesome friendship with other women way) for female friends. It would be great to hang out with "the girls" for a few drinks, chat and laughter.

Me too! I think it would be a blast! Annessa and I have talked about getting together for Karaoke, so you never know what antics we could get up to!:bddog:

haha yes! an SP-meet-n'-karaoke or even just something tame like coffee would be fun...would love to bounce ideas of some fellow workers :-)

I was trying to think of Canadian publishers who would be amenable to a book on sex work, but all I could think of was Cleis Press and Autonomedia, both of which are American publishers, I think.

You should start out by publishing articles in local papers, in Ottawa I'd say Capital Xtra and go from there.

If you need contributions, I've got tons of stuff that I've written (mostly short stories).

As well, I'd be totally down for SP karaoke :)

Fuck the publishers, it's the 21st century...start a website, make it a blog or something along those lines.

Maybe I'm wrong, but it's more about getting the stories out there to show a varied side of the industry. Sure there's some random girls with blogs out there doing their thing, but is there anything out there that is a collective ensemble of sex workers sharing their experiences?

There's some top notch writers here with many interesting tales to tell...I think something like that could generate plenty of interest and buzz. Even some positive attention to the industry. Would need to find someone to administer it and/or be an editor, but if done right it would be unique and amazing. It's live, it's current, it's always growing...any interest in that Mandalay?

Self publish with lulu.com or some other vanity publisher.

my opinion about blogs is often they are harder to search out that a book. or good ones anyway....with a paperback, you can at least flip it over and get a feel for the entire novel....in my experience anyway. I've been linked to some amazing blogs... but theres a lot of sifting through the free-speech and negative venting that tends to happen in a journal-like way in most of them that isnt really what can be gained from the success of having a first-hand experience that is chock full of real life experience accompanied with a dose of information and (hopefully) dispersing of the stereotypes out there.

some blogs are gems dont get me wrong, but I think in the many years of working, this ex-worker would rather face the termination of her escort career having succeeded in writing more that a flimsy free blog....at least thats the feeling I would have (I could be totally wrong!) :-)

writing a book based on NON-fiction (as opposed to a lot of the fiction crap out there by writers just wanting to write a juicy, dramatic story based on nothing they know about or have only had 2nd hand info to...that are terrible) about the industry would be welcomed by many of us as a great accomplishment. Anyone can write a Blog....very few can put in the time, dedication and research to commit themselves to a novel.

True. As another industry writer put it:

“It’s much harder to be a writer than a hooker because men are pickier about what they read than what they fuck” -- Xaviera Hollander

(ha ha ... she's kidding .... right?)

Yeah, a blog is not the best approach. I was thinking along the lines of going outside the box with a living, breathing, online novel...come up with something different, something new. To draw attention to something like this, it has to be unique. And it could also demonstrate a collective unity to an industry that has a reputation for being catty.

So I'm suggesting that instead of looking at what's out there and thinking that's not they way to go, try and think of what's not out there and figure out how to do it. You really have to differentiate yourself in this day and age...

ha ha ... I confess that I was once reduced to reading Chatelaine in a doctor's waiting room ... now I make dang sure I always bring my own reading material with me ...

(not that I have anything against Chatelaine ... in fact, if I recall correctly, there was a particularly good Xmas Cookie recipe ...)

I'm the same way, I will read just about anything with words: the back of cereal boxes, stereo warnings, etc.

But after I was once waiting for two hours at a walk-in clinic, I make sure to bring reading material if there is the possibility that I might be there for awhile.

The major advantage of the internet is how fast it can spread information. However, it is an invitational forum. Books are closer to a broadcast media.

So, yes I can see the value of a blog. Another approach is the "sell the chapters" idea. Create a treatment of what you want to write about, with a completed first chapter. This approach sells the book bit by bit (to a magazine for example) bringing in money in a stream. Then the book gets published.

In other words, try the book form first.

What is it about men sitting on the toilet and reading while they do their business? My ex-husband would sit in there for up to a half hour reading. Good thing we had two bathrooms! When I go, I'm in and out as fast as I can. Maybe a few jokes from Reader's Digest. My reading in the bathroom is mostly during a soak in the tub.

I guess it's true, some men would read anything that's withing reach of having their pants down. One time he forgot to bring something in to read, and ended up reading the insert that comes in the Tampax package. That was the shortest time he ever spent in there.

Getting back to the original thread, I agree that blogs can be interesting, but also time consuming and sometimes awkward to navigate. I agree that there is something to be said about having an actual book in front of you. I am just wondering how easy it would be to get published.

I am guessing Gene Simmons was able to publish his book "Ladies of the Night" because of who he is. But really, I always wondered why a rock star like him had any business writing a book about what he refers to as "the oldest profession".

Apparently he did his research, but I don't think it would be same as an actual escort writing about her trials and tribulations.

Vanity / self publishing is cheap these days. Some places even allow you to do publish-on-demand unlike years ago where you had to have a minimum of 1000 books ordered.

There are many sites online that offer this, I usually point to lulu.com since it is founded/own by a Canadian.
