They have an elegant lifestyle and you could consider them mistresses. They were generally well read and served as mistresses to the wealthy and influential. In today's terms they are escorts who try to cater to a wealthy client base, and would see themselves as upscale. As for hobbiest, that is a bit more difficult to define.
