Leopard Gecko ... anyone got any experience? I think my baby is dying ....

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have any experience with Leo's?

So he goes through this sort of dormant stage every winter when he's much less active, eats less, mopes around and sleeps a lot. But this winter it seemed to last longer, and seems to have weakened him more than any other year. He wasn't eating much when I left on tour but that's the time of year it is... so I didn't think much of it.

I just got home, and although he's being fed regularly he's hardly eaten at all, and he looks thinner and weaker than I've ever seen him. Poor little thing. His babysitter said she hardly saw him active at all, but came right out of his hide when he heard my voice and I misted him with warm water which he loves ... but he seemed to be really sluggish. uugghh.

I've had him for 15+ years and I don't know exactly how old he was when I got him... but I wonder if this might be the end...? Any idea on how to make a cute little lizard comfortable? sob ...

Hey Jessica

The average lifespan is between 15 and 20 years, they can live up to 30 years in some cases, but most pet owners have them for about 10 years. So, it may be old age. My daughter used to breed them, but for some reason they all dies within a month of each other, Not sure what happen, maybe some disease spread between them. All you can do is make sure he is warm and has water and food.

good luck

xoxo

I am so sorry to hear this Jessica! Son and I had our lovely Ricko for only about 3 years and well one day the poor thing just passed out... We didn't know how old he was but besides not eating much (was passed the hibertating season and spring) Ricko was ok... I can understand how sad and helpless U can feel as Geckos (Ricko was a leopard one too) can be so friendly and nice pets. Hugs to U darling!

hmmm maybe it's just time then. ohhhh! that's so sad!

he's warm .. he's cuddled up in the warm corner of his tank on the UTH and he's right under the light. He's got water and I'm misting him regularly but he just won't eat. He's a cricket fan but I think now he's too weak to catch them. He used to love to hunt!

I am headed to the pet store in the morning to see if they have some small mealworms, even though he has never liked them I figure if he's hungry and I feed him with tweezers he might take them. I can't watch him starve this is awful.

thanks for your help xoxo

So sorry to hear this, I too had a lizard and was surprised how much the little guy meant to me! He was a Chameleon named Fast Eddie.

Hope you can manage to keep him as comfy as possible, when lizards get sick, it is very difficult to pin point it. But at least you are giving him the very best life, as 15 years is a nice life for Lizards.

I've had many lizards, snakes (venomous and otherwise) and various critters over the years. I've currently got a bearded dragon, and he's juat coming out of his first hibernation as well. He's definitely been less active, eats less and doesn't show as much excitement at crickets as he did last summer.

Could be just a rough spring?

If you try the mealworms, be sure to squish their heads with the tweezers (as gross as that sounds). The little buggers can be risky for a weakened lizard. You might want to try crickets with the tweezers first.

So sorry about your little guy, but why not take it to a vet, there are those who specialize in exotic creatures.

Well it was late on a sunday night and I live in a very small town ... I figured I might get some quick tips here and I did! I have an appointment today at 3pm with a vet who knows lizards, but there is no "exotic pet" specialist in my area.

oh good to know!! I did try the mealworms and he ate one right away but he did struggle a bit with it so I will squish their heads from now on. Gawd that's gross. uugghh...

thanks for everyone's good wishes ... he already looks better ... maybe he just missed me!

What my son was doing Jessica is a bit the same, he was cutting the legs of the crickets and feeding Ricko with them and he would eat them! But was eating as much as he used to but at least was but I assume that U will also have a gross time doing this also poor U! I never wanted to do it myself but I assume if I was the one who had chosen Ricko I would have! Good luck darling!

How is he doing?

What did the vet say?

I just saw this post. You are indeed a very sweet, loving Lady. I hope someday I will be lucky enough to meet you in person.

update...

so he rallied back at bit in the spring and was pretty good all summer, but he didn't seem as strong as he was in years before. Last week he stopped eating again, and tonight he slipped away.

RIP little guy xo
