Slammer 303 Report post Posted October 15, 2012 I was just in one of the local shopping centres here in Ottawa and I was sickened to see multiple stores putting up their Christmas stocks/decorations/advertisements. When did Christmas start in the middle of November, let alone October? It's getting utterly rediculous. Not only are we encroaching on Remembrance Day, Hallowe'en has now been erased by the most "loved to hate" season of the year! C'mon men, what man has ever truely had a "Merry" Christmas? We've had tolerable ones, ok ones, even entertaining ones. Is there anyone who really wants to see actual Christmas displays in October? I for one am sick of it and I am making it a point to speak to the managers of all the stores that start this early and informing them that I won't be shopping there for the coming year. I don't need to be reminded just like when they put school supplies out in the middle of summer. Even though I enjoy Christmas, every year that passes, it seems as though it has become more and more of a commercial holdiay where the real reaon has been forgotten. That's capitalism for you! 80watts 130 Report post Posted October 16, 2012 Unfortunately we live in a consumer world. You probally can talk to the managers all you want, it is about the stores profit margin. After all the majority of stores do most of their yearly business during this season. Xmas sells, (not as much as sex though). Athos 108589 Report post Posted October 16, 2012 I too have seen Xmas decorations in some stores since late August/early September. It's insane. I love Christmas, and absolutely wonderful time of the year. But it's meaning (even if you aren't religious) has been totally lost to the crassest commercialism. Slammer 303 Report post Posted October 16, 2012 I am so glad that I am not the only one who finds this to be the most abhorid situation! I read a report not too long ago that had suicide rates during the "holiday season" among some of the highest all year. I suspect that may have something to do with people who are already not terribly happy with their family life having to stomach the false cheer associated with the prolonged and artificially extended Christmas season. I remember as a kid, when the Sears Christmas Wish Book came out at the beginning of September I would start getting excited about Christmas. Thanksgiving and Hallowe'en were nice distractions but the Christmas season was what it was all about. And if we really want to add some perspective to how close the season can creep up on us, most people have 5 paycheques until then. Start shopping lol! I will not argue in the least that Christmas has indeed become commercialized to an extent that is beyond the beyond but Christmas need only be as commercial as each of us allows it to be. I have to go on record as being a person that loves Christmas, the season, and virtually everything about it. I take pleasure in the little things. I am an avowed "I hate shopping" person, but I love going into malls at Christmas. I enjoy the bright lights, the decorations, the atmosphere,the bustle. What a great people watching opportunity. I recall fondly growing up in Montreal and walking St Catherine's Street and being mesmerized by the store front window displays. For many there is that special feeling about Christmas, a feeling or an attitude that would be nice to see all year long. Food drives, turkey drives, mitten and hat donations, a feeling that we are each others keepers and it is genuine. I personally love the commercialization of Christmas, and while I understand that not everyone does-- no one is forced to buy things for it. I like that it's not as much of a Christian holiday as it use to be... it's more for everyone now. (Though some people in my family still refuse to do anything special for it.) Sometimes I just get together with my friends and family who do celebrate, exchange little inexpensive pressies and eat, drink.. generally have a good time. Other years I go all out, I fill my world with twinkling lights, all sorts of colours and ridiculous decorations. (I even got some Star Trek tree ornaments last year :icon_wink:) I cook all sorts of fancy finger foods and spend a small fortune.. but it's all purely by choice. Those things aren't needed to enjoy the season. This year instead of an annoying push to get the Xmas buying season started, seeing some stuff in the stores was a nice reminder that I should start a little earlier this year, avoid the rush the week before Christmas and actually enjoy that time with people instead of in line at the stores.
