The Hobbiest Hobbyist?

Recommended Posts

I've noticed a lot of folks on here referring to our most famous descriptor as "hobbiest", which has always bothered me (being the geek that I am). The -est modifier on a word is typically used with an adjective to reflect the "most" of that quality (e.g. "funniest joke" or "angriest man"), whereas the -ist extension is used to denote a person who engages in some activity (e.g. "socialist" or "optimist").

So if someone is the hobbiest hobbyist, I wonder what kind of qualities they would exhibit? :-)

Yeah, "hobbiest" is the way it's spelled in Cerb literature (right at the get-go, your profile asks "Are you a Service Provider or Hobbiest?"), so it's easiest to conform. Correct spelling is the least of our obsessions in this hobby, eh wot?

ha ha ... "hobbiest hobbyist" ... I see that there is no recognized usage for "hobby" as an adjective ... time to define one, you say?

According to the OED, the primary original meaning of "hobby" was a small horse or pony; the meaning of "hobby" as an occupation pursued for amusement derived from the secondary meaning of "hobby" as a toy horse ("hobbyhorse", in other words-- derived from the same original meaning of "small horse").

So if one were to suggest a meaning for "hobby" as an adjective, perhaps it would be small. In this case "hobbiest hobbyist" would mean "smallest hobbyist" ... which would seem to point squarely at our own Sir Dummpy. The other meaning for "hobby" as an adjective that suggests itself is amusing. So in that case "hobbiest hobbyist" would mean "most amusing hobbyist", which points at Seymour, King of the Joke Thread.

what about the slobbiest hobbyist, or snobbiest hobbyest.

Or if I liked to fuck Law Enforcement Officers from England, would I have a Bobby Hobby? If I fucked her on the main floor of a hotel would it be Lobby Bobby Hobby?

I am arthritic...does that make me a Knobby Hobbyiest, or the Knobbiest Hobbiest Hobbyest?

If I cry when I orgasm would I be the Sobbiest Hobbyest?

If only stand on one leg while fucking, or am too drunk, I would definately be a wobbly Hobbyest.

Put it all together and I am Snobby, slobby, Knobby, Sobbywobly Hobbyest with Lobby Bobby hobby.

Once again I have successfully channelled Dr. Seuss, the words are flowing and my fingers are loose. When it comes to Rhyming I'm a god like Zeus.

Well, Joe, would you hobby in a house? Would you hobby with a spouse?

I think you'd hobby in a chair, but would you, could you, anywhere?

Do you like long legs (or gams)? Are you a hobbyist? (I think I am!)

thus: hobby, hobbier, hobbiest

ach! grammar is invading cerb.

Not grammar - it's the language police that's invading CERB. (Just kidding)

I'm soooooooooooo glad someone had the guts to bring this miscarriage of literary justice to the forefront. Ever since registering on Cerb I've had this uneasiness regarding calling myself "hobbiest".

I think it's seriously affected the way I hobby to the point where I considered retirement for 2.3847529 seconds! I was afraid to say anything negative about it for fear of banishment but since reading this post I'm feeling much better.

Thank you all for the group therapy ..... caveman in particular for having the courage to stand up and fight for what's right! The rest of you followers, like me, deserve a pat on the ass as well.
