Again, all just a matter of opinion and a list of five seems far too short in my opinion.

In no particular order as each one is great in their own right and not able to compare one to another. I am thinking just their names lone will be enough for others to recognize them. If not you can always Google them to find out who they are and what band(s) they play in.

Buddy Holly

Jimi Hendrix

Angus Young

Jimmy Paige

Frank Zappa

Randy Rhoads

Slash

And I have surpassed the five mark easily and many more could be listed

This discussion could go on for ever and while I can not disagree with any of the names I have seen so far, I would like to add a couple. Based on a pure "feeling" of the instrument David Gilmour and Stevie Ray Vaughn can make you cry........in a good way:)

Dang! This is a thread that I saw earlier, and have avoided... It's tough to pick a top five and equally tough to explain/justify my choices.

I guess the explanation should come first. Quite simply, RIFFS

Give me riffs and I am happy. I am attracted to music that gives me a visceral, immediate reaction. I want something that gets the blood pumping, my head banging, and my face muscles contracting into a joyous cheshire perma-grin. These guitar players do that. I shall provide specific axe-amples. Opinions are fun eh? ;)

1. Dave Mustaine. He wrote Killing is my business... And business is good! You did not.

2. Jeff Hanneman. Angel of death. That is all

3. Jeff Waters. Seriously, why isn't Annihilator WAY more popular??? THey also transitioned into a modern sound with rad melodies without too much pain, two links are required :p

4. Spike Cassidy. The man who reconciled punk rock and metal for me. Dang I love me some crossover!

5. Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein. Both classic Misfits and Re-incarnated, he always brought something for me to sink my teeth into!

Special mention to Jason Becker. Dude hasn't let illness stop him from shredding :)

As a player a top five is not an easy feat as I like so many people. Having said that here is a top 5 list.

1. Slash (Ever since GNR he's topped my list and is possibly the best solo player ever)

2. Lindsay Buckingham (Great Finger Picking Guitarist)

3. Prince (Most people don't think of Prince but he is really good)

4. Buddy Guy (Blues Legend that I would love to see play live)

5. Eric Clapton (Excellent technical blues/rock style)

I'll put forth my champion:

Gustavo Santaollala

The man has nimble fingers, won back to back "Best Soundtrack" Oscars for Brokeback Mountain and Babel and is the creator of this beautiful piece.

There's some good clips on youtube from 'This Might Get Loud".

Imagine hanging out with Jimmy Page in his rec room, it's great to see his enthusiasm and knowledge of music. He's in his sixties and he's got the energy and passion of a teenager!

I would add...

  1. Ani DiFranco

  2. Joni Mitchell
    joni-mitchell-01.jpg

Both are incredible (incredible) guitarists and were (or still are as is the case with Ani) producing/writing/performing their own music in a predominantly male environment. Total icons!

Somehow missed this thread earlier - must have been tuning my strings.

A top 5 - it's always hard to say. But here goes. And I decided to do this just off the top of my head as opposed to really thinking about it, which would get me nowhere. Some of these guys have been mentioned before.

Hey, it just occurred to me when I said guys, maybe we should have one for the ladies too. I'll start it and nominate Bonnie Raitt. And leave it to you to take it from there.

Back to the guys - in no particular order (but not including classical guitarists - I couldn't handle the pressure of one more different genre). Some of these have been already listed.

Starting with 2 jazz men.

Lenny Breau

Jim Hall

Now a guy who changed everything for every guitarist

Jimi Hendrix

Cross-over guys

Mark Knopfler

Ry Cooder

Country Blues - little known but brilliant. Had a tragic end, hanged himself in a jail cell.

Roy Buchanan

OK - can't resist, one more jazz guitarist

Charlie Christian
