Donating hair

Anyone here ever donated hair to make wigs for cancer victims? I've been growing mine out for quite some time for this exact purpose, and right now it's about down to the middle of my back .......and driving me bananas! I'm so anxious to cut it but don't know if it's long enough yet! I've tried going online but some places say the minimum is 6inches, other places say 10inches, some 12, some 14, etc. I want to still have it long enough to have in a ponytail after having cut it. Has anyone here ever done it or know exactly what the required minimum is? Also not sure where to go to do it...does any salon participate? Thanks all!

My sister has donated her hair 3 times :). She always gives the hair to "Locks of Love" http://www.locksoflove.org

 

Her hair was pretty long but it sounds like yours is longer than hers was. I think you're ready to donate :):):).

I plan to do this myself. I am about the 10inch mark now so probably in the early new year it will sent off. Remember to cut it while in a tight pony tail or they can't use it. Any hair that falls out of the pony tail is not usable.

I donated mine once when I was in college *(Yeah I shaved my head, hehe)

 

I called around town (I wasn't here) but I found a hairdresser that took care of it for me and a friend, maybe that might be an option.

In the early 90's I donated my hair for cancer patient just before I became a firefighter. The requirements are not as bad as some think.

Hair must be clean and dry

Put hair in a ponytail at the nape of your neck

You must have at least 8 inches of hair from tip to tip

Cut the hair above the rubber band

Wavy hair is accepted. Straighten it out to measure for the 8 inches

Place hair in a zip bag

But are you sure your hair has been truly used to

help people in need?

 

Hair stores sales Human Hair for at least $150.00 each pack

it is a huge profitable business. A friend of mine has stopped doing sex

work to be in the business of negotiating human hair.

 

I read in the Globe & Mall that young women in poor nations

are kidnapped and their hair cut and then sold to the billion dollar

Human Hair industry in the West and other places.

 

I read a book about hair and the info in it were horrific.

Wow that's crazy... and horrible... I didn't know that.

 

I"m sure that there are reputable places out there as well though. ;) I've heard of Locks of Love before, a bunch of times.

 

I don't think there's a mass underground hair smuggling ring here. I have lots of hair, they should come get me... Lol!

I would love to donate, but they do not accept dyed or tinted hair.

 

As for the underground "hair selling" economy, it something totally different than a legitimate charity that uses the hair to make wigs for cancer patients.
