I had recently tried to put an ad on CL. There was no listing for escorts, so I chose "casual encounters". I tried to be discreet so I didn't talk about donations until the second email. Now I have someone calling themselves "Lisa Whill" threatening me. She/He said they traced me through my IP address, through my hotmail address, to my home...is that even possible? I replied that they must be quite cold hearted , reminding he/she that there are single mothers out there and struggling college students etc. That all SP's are not drug addicts or alcoholics. he/she emailed me back saying they were now calling child endangerment on me. sheesh. Is this even possible? Any thoughts or help on the matter I would look forward to.

Sounds like they are trying to tell you bullshit. Your Hotmail address can reveal an IP address, if you know where to look for it, but that's about it. There is no proof you are doing anything against the law by posting in that category.

It sounds like a jaded wife, gf, etc. Just because they have an IP address, dosen't mean they can do anything. For all they know, your IP address could be a proxy. And what does an IP address have to do with child endangerment? nothing. It's just an IP address.

Mod, perhaps you can chime in here on what a person can and cant' do with an IP address?

Sounds like are just trying to fuck you around. To even get your ISP info, law enforcement would have to go before a JP and explain why a search warrant is needed, and even then it's hard to get them

From your email they can get your IP address and from there tell your provider and city that you emailed from... Without cooperation from the ISP (usually a warrant), they can't get any further info (such as name, address etc...).

To my knowledge (and I am not a lawyer) even if it was solicitation (though your ad was in casual encounters, but you did ask for donation in your second email), only solicitation in a public place is illegal as the law stand now. Public place does NOT extend to internet, email. private or cell phone. What you did therefore was NOT illegal. No one can threaten you when you have not broken any law. On second point, to my knowledge an IP address can only give your approximate location, and not your name or home address.

I wanted to give you some Rep points Megan, but it appears I've been to generous to you already. I wanted to back up what you were saying no ISP will give up personal info to any random caller, it's not going to happen. They won't give up that info without a warrant.

Your advice about the cas matter is solid as well. There's no law against being a sex worker, her work as a sex worker is providing for her well being and that of her child.

Most consumer IP addresses are dynamic, meaning that they change from time to time. Today 1.2.3.4 is your address, tomorrow it might be the church down the street.

If you ever want to find out what your (public) IP address is, visit http://www.whatismyip.com/

If your address is dynamic (and it probably is), and you want a new one, most of the time you can accomplish this by turning the power off (or unplugging) the cable/DSL modem for a while.

The best thing to do with these sort of people is not respond. By responding you're giving them what they want, and perhaps unintentionally additional information to antagonize you with.

Cowboy Kenny and Megan are right! Most of the ladies I know who have children work at alternate locations where their children live. The ones I know who did work out of where their children live, make sure they are no where near the premises when they entertain and none of them have ever had any problems.

To remove children from their mother on a suspected child neglect or abuse allegation; the allegation has to be investigated and proven. It does however, open a file on the family even if the allegations were disproved. At a later date, if there are custody issues or some other legal situation involving the children, the initial report will come into play. Do not confuse the legal standing with reality. The reality is we can end up with a case worker that is biased against us, prosecutors that secretly deem us unfit and judges who side with them. It is always better to stay off their radar at all costs because you do not know who you will end up dealing with. From personal experience I know statements like "they can't" and anecdotal stories of people who haven't had a problem are reassuring, but can be misleading. Be full of care when it comes to the authorities and your children...

I can't emphasize enough what Cat has said. The CAS too often behaves as a law unto itself under the guise of "erring on the side of caution."

None of us wants to be accused of supporting our children from the avails of prostitution. It's not illegal to do so, but the CAS may tell you that it's a "grey" area, which means that they'll keep the file open if someone is concerned.

That said, the OP shouldn't worry about being reported to the CAS. As noted above, it would take a court order to divulge the info.

To the OP, I do not think you have much to be really worried about here. Someone is just trying to prey on your fears and get inside your head. For the most part I would just ignore them, it is very unlikely that you will be able to change their mind through a debate.

I had a somewhat similar experience where I sent an email in response to a CL ad, but a person that was not supposed to see it, found it and emailed me. I was told they had my IP address and home address and that the authorities were on their way over and I was threatened with bodily harm as well.

I laughed it off as I had done nothing illegal, and told them that they were full of crap and did not have anything of substance. Nothing ever came of it at all, it just went away.

Agreed it's best to stay off the radar of CAS but with caseloads being what they are it's not likely that CAS is going to investigate any claim without more solid proof other than an ad on cl and an ip address. CAS is already aware that there are single moms using cl to earn money I assure you of that.

The person threatening you is trying the "scared straight" approach to shame and frighten you, challenge them to walk a mile in your shoes and see how it feels. If they were truly so concerned they would be offering you assistance and not condemning you, I can't stand people who prey on the fears of others.

Forget CL!!!

CERB is great and if you can afford it place ads on EC....

they are preying on you and probably is a SO of someone who sees us. Do not answer their mails AL ALL!

Keep going and smile with your chin up.

An email provider needs a warrant to cooperate with the law enforcement. A warrant will need a back up of crime committed from your ip...plus, ip's are always changing.

Do not fret....you got someone very mean and you have to stop feeding their hate!

Even with a warrant, if the IP address is dynamic, which 99.9% if the time for a consumer it will be, the ISP would have to research who that IP address belonged to at that point in time.

This can be a labour intensive and time consuming task, depending on the ISP, the type of service, etc., if those records are maintained at all.

They might claim to know your home address, dog?s name, etc. but there are several Nigerian Princes that do as well and they at least want to help you get your $50 million inheritance.
