castle 38816 Report post Posted December 11, 2011 Doing away with your home internet? After the endless tech problems I've been having today I've been seriously considering it. I currently have my landline, cable and internet all through the same provider. Lately I've been seriously considering getting rid of the landline and cable as I barely use the land line anymore and I watch shows on dvd and blu-ray but haven't watched actual television since last spring. So when it comes to those two services I'm basically throwing money out the window. And after today I'm wondering if I even need the internet. I have my bb to connect to cerb and facebook and the like. And I can use my computer at work for other basic tasks. So do I really need home internet? I think the only thing I'd miss would be the internet porn lol. Which come to think of it, doing away with porn would probably be a blessing in disguise :p So what do you all think? But I lent my sister my laptop like a year ago so I only use my work computer for some stuff and my phone for everything else. Have no cell phone or BB, so you could probably get rid of one OR the other (Internet OR mobile) IMHO the reason for the decline of our society is that we have no more down time. I'd still have my bb which has internet. I'd still be checking cerb every 5 mins hoping for dirty pm's ;) but part of me thinks it would feel kinda liberating to not have internet at home. thedriver 6179 Report post Posted December 11, 2011 I have not had a landline for over 6 years now, only a cell phone and it is not a Blackberry or even a smart phone. I have not had cable in over 2 years only rabbit ears for local news and I watch tv shows and movies on the internet from an independent provider not the big corporations. I signed up for netflix last summer and that is great! I also go to the tv internet sites like CTV, Global, City TV and others to watch shows. For the moment while I still have to work and have to live in Ottawa I would not give up my internet but when I retire and move away I am sure that I will gladly give it up. The question at that time will be if I get a smart phone or give up my cell phone completely and rely on internet cafes or the public library and public phones to stay in touch with friends and family. Only time will tell. Besides there can big a very big change in the next 10 to 15 years in how we comunicate and access the internet. Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Boomer 33202 Report post Posted December 11, 2011 I used to have my internet and and landline on the same pair of wires, but after I had on going repair troubles with Ma Bell (fixed the phone and then the internet wouldn't work, but no worry you can use dial up until we get around to it). I moved the internet over with my cable and have had good service ever since. This year I got a BB and have been trying to see what I can do with it with a fairly standard data plan. Next step is to drop the landline. As for getting rid of the internet, no way. I am retired and don't have access to a work account. Most of my bills come electronically, do my banking, and all sorts of personal things on line. The other advantage over using the phone for internet is that I dock my laptop to nice big screen., and my eye sight isn't getting any better. Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

But I personally believe that since I even take online courses and I do online banking, losing the internet would be tough for me. That is my take.. Students need their internet, to provide them with research at home,but they can always use a library as well,but having that comfort to work at their own pace and place is good for mind. Having your internet disconnected, then reconnected leads to additional charges from the carrier. If you feel you don't need it,then dispose of it. Game, shop, work from home sometimes. as for the Cable TV .. i stream most of the show and streamed Live sports with subscriptions so I dont really have the need for one. I am not saying that people do not need internet at home but rather that some needs are created in our own minds or be social pressures. Technology changes as the world progresses and the newest technologies become integrated into society and become the norn for conformity. When we step back and evaluate our needs we can often find that there are many alternatives to meet our requirments. Our choices then become a matter of personal preferences and convinience. When we recognise that we made the choice for the sake of convenience rather then necessity we realise that we made the choice of sperging on a luxury. If you use at home internet for work or school then it becomes an investment or part of a buisness expense (it does not matter if you can claim it or not). Yes I do have internet at home and I chose high speed DSL. I recocnise that it is a luxury. I look at it as my monthly entertainment fee from which I get television, movies, newspapers, magazines, music, comunication with friends and most importantly my source for porn!:icon_lol: Do I need it?
