Web Designer, Web Hosting, SEO and Marketing Person Wanted

I have decided to stay in the business until the end of 2010 and want a new look.

 

3 years ago I posted the same wantd ad, only to have a webdesigner take my money, build a website, www.bobbivictoria.com and then disappear 2 months, with the codes, instructions, etc.

 

www.bobbivictoria.com is up for sale and I would like to try and get the same domain name if possible.

 

I am looking for someone to build a high end, polished, sophisticated website for me.

I am looking at expanding my advertising and want to try and market a certain gentleman.

I am thinking a 5-7 page website.

 

If you are a phenomenal web designer and think you can tackle this project for me, please send my your fee for building the website, one year of webhosting, etc. I would like to be able to learn the ins/outs of webdesign, as well, add new photos, announcements etc.

Hey Bobbi, sorry to hear about your web site problems... and I'm really sorry about your domain - I just checked for you and it looks as though a "squatter" now owns it and is asking $1300 for it.

 

I wish I could help you with your site, but I'd have to do it in my off-time and couldn't squeeze it in without my SO noticing...

 

As a very experienced, high-end web designer/developer, I can offer you my opinion and advice (remember what they say about free advice though).

 

Here we go:

 

1. Register your domain name yourself. It's really quite easy, and doing it yourself means you're in full control of it - you'll be responsible for renewing it and won't have to worry about losing it.

 

Now, unless you are willing to pay these jerks $1336 for your domain, you'll have to decide on a new domain name.

(You can usually find out who owns a domain by going to http://whois.domaintools.com/, and entering the domain name in question).

 

Okay, how to register a domain name: go to godaddy.com (they're pretty darned cheap) follow the instructions, buy your domain (you'll see, it's very easy - if you find it confusing, call them). Make sure that they email address you use for your contact information with the domain registrar (in this case, that would be godaddy) is one that you will use for a long time - this is where you'll be notified of your domain expiring.

 

This company, the registrar, is who will be in charge of your domain name - they are not the same as your web host. This company will hold your domain name on your behalf and point your domain name to wherever your web host is (e.g. when someone types http://www.whatever.com into their browser the registrar will tell the browser to go to "whatever web host" to get the web site associated with the whatever.com domain (there's more to it than that, but this works for my purpose here).

 

A lot of registrars, including godaddy.com, also offer web hosting - but I really dislike the "all of my eggs in one basket" thing... Besides, it's been my experience that web hosting with a place like this will be "user friendly"- that is, they'll try to set everything up so that they average person can go in and get running without any help from a professional. This may seem good, but when you get around to getting the professional he/she often finds that in order to make the hosting "user friendly" a lot of the stuff he/she needs to "tweak" is turned off, or inaccessible.

 

I recommend using a completely different company for web hosting.

 

Anyhow, once you're all done registering your domain you should end up with a username and a password for the account from which you will administer your domain (don't worry, that sounds scarier than it is). Save that username and password somewhere you won't lose it - you'll need it for as long as you own your domain.

 

2. Find a hosting company. This is the company that will "host" your website - this is where all of the web site files will be stored. When someone types in http://www.whatever.com, your registrat (godaddy.com if you go that route) will tell their browser to go to the hosting company's server and ask for directions - your web host will then point them to the little bit of private space you have there and "voila!", there's your web site. There are lots of web hosting companies out there, for pretty cheap too. I will recommend canadianwebhosting.com only because that's a company I frequently use for clients - they're relatively inexpensive, very reliable, and as a developer I like the access they give to the technical stuff. Whatever host you decide to go with I would recommend making sure that your hosting plan is on a "linux server", supports "php 5", offers unlimited "MySQL databases".

 

After you've set up a hosting account you'll be given a username and password again - keep this information safe, you'll need it in the future.

 

Generally, after your hosting account has been set up they'll email you some information. In this info you should find two sets of numbers: primary DNS, and secondary DNS (they'll look something like this "75.78.181.101" & "75.78.181.102". Keep this email safe (copy and paste the info, or save the actual email somewhere) - you'll need those numbers.

 

Now go to the registrat (say godaddy.com) and log in to your account, go to the domain management section and point your domain to those 2 numbers I mentioned above (primary DNS and seconday DNS).

 

Again, call the company and ask for help if you need it... they'll walk you through it (lots of people do this stuff themselves and don't know how at first - these companies are used to helping you out and want to make it as easy as possible for you so that you continue to do business with them).

 

3. You may want to do this step before step 2, as this step could take a while and you'll be paying for the web hosting all the while... If you do, DON'T let the developer take care of step 2. for you!!! - that's how you'll end up losing control of your site again. (maybe 1. and 2. sound technical and difficult, but they really aren't, and in both cases you can call the company's for support - they'll hold your hand all the way through if need be. It's very important to handle this stuff yourself though if you don't want to risk losing control of your site.)

 

Find a designer/developer. DO YOUR RESEARCH!!! This is VERY important... if you're serious about a professional site, and don't want to have to deal with a some flake that disappears in two months and leaves you with nothing, don't go for the cheapest-I-work-out-of-my-basement-college-student-type... sometimes you'll get lucky and that'll work out for you, BUT MOSTLY NOT. Go through the designer's portfolio and make sure you like all of his or hers stuff. Check out the previous client (should be a decent sized list with links to all of the sites (so that you can verify they actually did all of them)).

 

DON'T GO WITH FLASH!!! I repeat - DO NOT GO WITH FLASH!!! I develop sites in Flash as well as regular HTML, DHTML etc. If you want to be able to update your site yourself and don't want to end up with "no files" if your developer disappears one day - DO NOT HAVE YOUR SITE DEVELOPED WITH FLASH. The files you work with in Flash are ".fla" files (these are the files in which you add and edit text, pictures, code, functionality etc)... when you're done developing in Flash you "compile" your code in ".swf" files (these are the files that get posted to your web site). These compiled .swf files are not editable. You can't edit these files at all. These files can be decompiled, but not everyone can do that. Save yourself some money and headache and avoid Flash.

 

Also, unless you go with designer/developer who's already developed CMS (content management system) so that you can make updates yourself easily (this will likely be a lot more expensive, even if they don't develop it for you specifically) you won't be able to change anything on the site yourself... and again, if that developer disappears at some point and leaves you without the original .fla files and layered artwork and stuff you're probably out of luck.

 

Have your site designed and developed in HTML, with WELL WRITTEN CSS, using javascript, php and mysql for the backend. If you go this route, all of your files will be stored on your server and can all be edited by you or anyone you choose in the future. There are some really nice freeware high-end javascript and php applications that can add a lot of functionality to your site for free (that is, your developer could use an set up these free scripts without having to charge you for developing them from scratch)... one great one is "slimbox" and "mootools", this a great set up for your photo albums, and you'll be able to update themselves fairly easily after it's all set up. When it's all done, slimbox looks just as slick as some fancy Flash feature, but it's a lot cheaper and any developer can go in a edit it at any time.

 

HTML is also a lot better for SEO. I can't recommend anyone who offers ongoing SEO maintance, but I can suggest that if your site is set up properly the first time (i.e. when you have it developed) you can make it really search engine friendly and probably avoid the need for ongoing SEO. Again you can research this a bit yourself and ask the developer about it up front. Page titles, image tag alt attributes, keywords, meta tags, accessibility attributes... all of these things when done properly from the start will get your site noticed ahead of others.

 

Also, tell you developer up front that when your site is all finished you want the layered photoshop files. Be clear about this at the start and make sure they agree to it. These files will be helpful in the future if changes need to be made.
