lakeranger 944 Report post Posted June 12, 2014 I was at an Ottawa SC this week and one the dancers was telling me of a recent visit from Service Canada employees speaking to them about the upcoming changes in the prostitution laws and how it will impact dancers and strip clubs. Some of the comments that came from the Service Canada people if accurate clearly illustrate the disturbing disconnect between our elected officials, overeducated/underachieving bureaucrats and the realities of sex workers. All the more reason to speak out against the proposed changes. I applaud Service Canada's efforts to reach out to the dancers but it's a day late and a dollar short in my opinion. In addition, they should be talking to the girls for their input not talking at them to suggest that "big brother" is now here to save them. Old Dog 179138 Report post Posted June 12, 2014 I am dubious as to whether Service Canada actually sent reps on official business. My guess? It was a bunch of boys from the closest Service Canada office just talking it up with the dancers. Service Canada would not have any jurisdiction either in the dissemination of information nor the enforcement of any future laws stemming from C36. fortunateone 156618 Report post Posted June 13, 2014 I agree, OD. When the city that issues adult services licenses in Saskatoon does enforcement and information visits, it is LE that does it. That includes making fake appts with sps visiting or local who i guess don't put their license# in their ads. I myself am a dancer and have traveled to afar as well as many neighbouring cities including Ottawa. I also have made many great friends along the way. I have never experienced this myself nor have I heard "chatter" amungst others. This would surely make for a "hot topic" in the change room. :) The other thing I find odd about this happening particularly in Ottawa, is because Ottawa is one of a few of Ontario cities where you do not require a licence to be an Adult Entertainment Dancer. So if this was fact you think they would be visiting these establishments in cities that requires one. I have a licence in several cities, registered with my Full Name, Social Insurance, Current Address and Phone. I pay my taxes. canuckhooker 19202 Report post Posted June 13, 2014 I am intimately familiar with Service Canada, and whatever they call HRDC these days. There is nothing in the SC mandate that would get them involved in this at all. HRDC, maybe, only because they have Labour and all the employment and EI policy. I will be sure to share this with her over a few drinks and chuckles next week. I was a bit suspicious but with all of the redirect and politics surrounding the new prostitution legislation not much would surprise me. I'm pretty sure based upon the girl's demeanor and our conversation that I wasn't duped by her. I've known her for a while and she was genuinely concerned about her ability to continue working as a dancer while she finished her education.
