By age 66 most of us have seen about 2 million tv commercials. According to a guest on the Rachael Ray show, companies are tricking our brains into making certain purchasing decisions.

Using neuro-science, they have determined that the most addictive sounds have a much better success rate in tv advertising sales than the imagery we are used to. There reasoning is that most individuals have the television on as a background source of noise and that these sounds may attact our attention from the task at hand.

The top three sounds are

1) giggling baby

2) vibrating cell phone

2) ATM dispensing cash

Can you think of a commercial using one of the above either consciously or subliminaly that uses this tactic?

How well has it worked where you are concerned? There is one tv ad that always makes me look up but yet I can't remember what it is for other than somekind of hair product LOL. Mixed in with the sound track is a faint but annoying vibrating cell sound that always makes me check my phone.

One of the main reasons I chose to stop watching television almost 10 years ago. The commercials were driving me insane, I hated being told what to think, I don't trust the News because the stations are owned by corporations and finally, even with a satellite, there was rarely anything good on! True, I'm on my computer a lot more often, but no T.V. helps me get things done and live life. It is a struggle in the winter though, especially here in Winnie!

I know that there is one commercial that stands out in my mind...the diaper commercial I've seen a thousand times lol!

It's the one where the guy goes in the bedroom to change the baby boy and when he goes to take the diaper off the little one pees everywhere like a fire hose! He lets out a giggle and a squeal that everytime I hear it I look up from what I'm doing lol! :-D

I do believe that advertisers are changing their strategies to attract consumers. With all the PCs, laptops, ipods, and other forms of media capabilities, to use sound as a form of marketing would be a brilliant move on their part.

As well, I sometimes sleep with the TV on, so what better way to subliminally put something in your head then in your most relaxed state? But I'm sure the FCC would not allow any form of subliminal marketing...although I do recall a story I heard about how shopping areas like the grocery store and big department stores are using certain kinds of music in their businesses that seem to "encourage" consumers to make purchases...has anyone else heard this?

Anyway, I know whatever it is they are doing it seems to be working! :-P

Actually Julie, in a wine store in the states they played various cultural music at different times of the day and found that consumers would more frequently buy a French wine when French music was playing, Italian etc....you get the picture.

I hate commercials. I now watch only a few TV shows (Lost, Dexter and so on). However I always wait until the day after their broadcast and download them. The downloaded versions have no commercials. I have friends that do this so much they have simply cancelled their cable service. I'd cancel mine but I do like some live events such as sports and the recent Olympics.

Once my teenager (who also does the same) put on a live episode of House and it felt so jarring when a commercial came on. Yuck!

Besides, an hour TV show with no commercials is only 42 minutes long. Thats another 18 minutes added to my life!

Some commercials I love whether print or tv or the internet! The whole process from the idea and selling the client on the concept to the story board, the script and then production and editing is something that fascinates me. Which why I like Mad Men. There are times I'm just blown away and wondered how did they come up with this. I've been in the middle of the creative process and everyone thinks they are some what creative but when you come across real talent it's a whole different ball game and pretty cool.

Peace

Same here! I enjoy watching commercials although I get mine from youtube. I don't have cable at home and seldom if ever watch the "idiot box".

Some of the best television I ever watched was commercials. How is it that more thought and creativity goes into a 30 second commercial than into a 90-minute movie??

But that said, I've never been a huge consumer. I have never been one to run right out and buy because I saw something in an ad -- does anyone do that?

I don't really understand how television commercials work. I mean, I get it, but I can't personally remember ever buying something because of a television commercial.

I don't get a craving for a fast food after seeing a commercial for it. I don't buy a specific type of gum because I saw it on television. I haven't rushed out to Best Buy for the next latest, greatest toy because it was on the tube... I don't get how it can be so effective (it must be effective if they companies continue to spend so much money on it right?)

I really dislike most commercials, especially stupid ones (and I disagree that the annoying ones are the most effective... I'll actually mute the television or change the station if it annoys me enough - and I guarantee that I will actually go out of my way to avoid the product if the ad really irritates me... like that freakishly annoying Anthony whoever and dollars for gold... WFT?!? I've an even better idea - dollars for cash!!! just send me your old scrap cash and mail you back a cheque... "I sent them $350 cash and they sent me back a cheque for $275! It was that easy!")... Er, uh... where was I?

Oh ya! I really LOVE funny commercials though. I'll come back into the room even to catch some of them (I'm still not aware of their power to make me buy anything, but I do find them awfully entertaining)

This one's really cute - the bottled water roller babies - ha ha ha! I love it! Bottled water sucks though, really.

I guess this video may support megforfun's original post...

LOL....I use TV as background noise while I am reading, surfing the net, posting on CERB....but every once in awhile a commercial will come on that makes me look at the tv! I like my commercials via youtube and the like. If I am in the mood I can search out funny commercials and spend some time watching those I find amusing!

I usually have "Stevie" (the TV, haha) on - mostly for background noise. When actually watching I use the commercials to multi-task and get the little things done!

Did you ever see an advertising film festival movie where they show the best commarcials from around the world? Some commercials are very impressive. That reminds me, I haven't been to those in a long time, they use to play them a repertoire cinemas like the Towne, the Mayfair or the Nelson.

Also, did you ever notice that once in a blue moon you see a commercial or an ad that provides you with information on a product you reallly need? All of a sudden it's not a commercial anymore, it's a service and you feel they have done you a favour.

I try to ignore most commercials but the volume is usually set higher, which annoys me.

But I really like is visiting my sister or my friend Carrie's because they both have PVR and can record their favorite shows ahead of time and then with a simple click of the remote fast forward through them.

It's heaven, really!

(The Mothers/over-nite Sensation)

I am gross and perverted

I'm obsessed and deranged

I have existed for years

But very little has changed

I am the tool of the Government

And industry too

For I am destined to rule

And regulate you

I may be vile and pernicious

But you can't look away

I make you think I'm delicious

With the stuff that I say

I am the best you can get

Have you guessed me yet?

I am the slime oozin out

From your TV set

You will obey me while I lead you

And eat the garbage that I feed you

Until the day that we don't need you

Don't go for help ... no one will heed you

Your mind is totally controlled

It has been stuffed into my mold

And you will do as you are told

Until the rights to you are sold

That's right folks ...

Don't touch that dial

Well, I am the slime from your video

Oozin along on your livin' room floor

I am the slime from your video

Can't stop the slime, people, lookit me go

Frankly, I'm not much of a television watcher or fan unless I'm up for a hockey game or golf tournament. I find most of the shows nowadays quite junky especially the reality shows etc. Watching the news is depressing for the most part and usually irritates me especially when I have to watch some idiot politician shooting his or her lying mouth off. If I had my way I wouldn't have a television in my home but my wife loves to watch television in the evening and that's why I pay about $72 a month for cablevision. Personally, I'd rather spend my time actually doing things as opposed to watching others do stuff. I would also rather read a good book or listen to music for leisure than watch television. I must admit though I've seen some pretty funny and creative commercials over the years that were actually more entertaining than the show I was watching. These are very rare unfortunately.
