  1. Hello All. This is more a question for gentlemen but ladies are more than welcome to give their point of view, of course. So here it is: When a lady changes her name, what comes to your mind? Do you think that she just wanted to change it, or do you think that she might have "something to hide"? Is this an issue for you? And do you prefer names that sound more like "real names" (even if you know that they are not our real names, of course ;-) or do you prefer made-up-out-of-the-ordinary-names? Or maybe how the names sound do not matter to you at all? As you might guess, I have been thinking of changing my name, just because I feel that something different would better suit me. But before doing so, I would like to know which impact it could have to do it. Thank you very much for your answers! (p.s.: if I were to change my name I would still mention somewhere on my website and here my former name).

  3. Reading Time Magazine today (February 8th, 2016 issue) I learned that Barbie was based on a German doll that Ruth Handler discovered when she traveled to Europe in 1956. The name of this doll was Lilli, and was a call-girl! Quite funny to learn this today... I also learned that Barbie will go under a makeover to appear more realistic to little girls' eyes, and will be produced in various body shapes. Some dolls will be shorter with more curves, others will be petite, others taller. Barbie faced many difficult phases through her life, and was often accused to cause body image issues to little girls. What do you think of this?
  4. As I have many allergies I cannot enter a nail salon as the chemicals smells are too strong and could be an issue for me. I have always taken care of my nails myself since my teenage years and do not let anybody else do that for me. And I have beautiful natural nails, so I don't want to take the risk to have them damaged by chemicals. I used to apply regular polish but as it tends to go away very fast, I now apply gels myself. Once you get the method, it is very easy to apply, and it stays up to 2 weeks. I don't have them too long, usually short or 2/3 mm long, and square shaped. I only apply very classic colors: various shades of red, dark brown, dark purple, and the unbeatable transparent/light pink (that we call here "French Manicure" although as a French I have no clue why it is called this way because in France we don't. It is like "French doors". The first time I heard this I wondered what the hell a "French Door" was! ;-)
  5. I agree with you Roaminguy that thinking of our retirement ahead of time is our responsibility. But I wish that such financial matters were taught in schools in a serious way. I don't know about here in schools, but in France (where I grew up) it is not taught at all. Managing your bank account properly, doing a budget, understanding that paying bills on time works well for your credit, but knowing when to avoid using credit, how to do savings and investments, RRSPs etc... and prepare for life as well as retirement. Therefore, in Europe, a lot of people grew up and grow up thinking that saving or investing is for "others who already have money" or "rich people". There is a book that I really love that should be offered to any teenager. It is "Rich by Thirty (A young adult's guide to financial success" by Lesley Scorgie (Key Porter books, 14.95$). And it is of interest to anybody who has not a clue at all about all these financial matters that are so important. And don't get mislead by the title, the way it is written and presented is very wise and educational, not a recipe to become a millionaire as soon as possible, but to make understand people, especially young ones, that the sooner they start the better, how to do it, and how their lifestyle has an impact on their finances. Everybody brought so many interesting points in this thread that I have changed my mind on a few things since I started it! Thanks everybody.
  6. I want to get rid of a few things at home, including some CDs and books. But sometimes we want to keep things that we like that have or even might not have a sentimental value. Often these things just stay on our shelves or in boxes and we do nothing with them! I have many CDs at home, and I have imported some of them in my iTunes library and in iPods. But I wonder if I should even keep my whole collection of CDs and just import all and make some room at home. And maybe to switch to virtual books only as well? (although I have more difficulty with this as I prefer to hold a book in my hands when I read). What about you? Are you going for the "all digital", or do you still want the "real thing"? I am looking forward to reading your answers!
  7. I have seen in a Dollarama and a McDonald's employees who were in their mid 70ies. I really don't know what to think about this because I did this kind of job in my 20ies when I was a student, and these are certainly not the best jobs to get. I felt bad to see people in their mid 70ies working there but at the same time if they do need the money, what choice do they have? But still, I find it very disturbing and sad that some people in their mid 70ies have to work in such places because their pension is not enough.
  8. Oh my! Me again posting in this section! I watched "Unbreakable" with Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson and really liked it. I am not a super hero movies fan but this one is totally different. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0217869/?ref_=nv_sr_2
  9. I watched the documentary "Green Porno". It is about Isabella Rosselini's work on explaining - with short movies and a live show - how some animals reproduce. Funny, surprising, bizarre and sometimes "disgusting" to learn how some species reproduce!
  10. Ah! This topic really interests and fascinates me. One reason being that as I was raised in Europe, I have a very different view on retirement than the one we have here in North-America. In Europe, work is mostly seen as something unpleasant that you want to get rid of as soon as possible. Retirement equals "long-time deserved holidays for life" that you look forward to, hoping that you will still be in good health to enjoy it enough once you do retire. In Europe, retirement pensions have diminished considerably through years (with the fear that they might completely disappear one day) and the "official" age of retirement is constantly pushed due to financial/economical issues face by governments. Will Europeans have to work until they are 80? Until they die? It really does not make them happy. In North-America, work and retirement are seen in a different way. Here, it seems that everybody wants to work until their last breath, as if nothing existed after a life spent working for others, society, a boss, a company, products, whatever it is... But the reality of economics that have been striking Europe for a long time is slowly striking North-America too. When I hear people who are 65 and over saying that they could retire but that they feel that they can still work and should still have "the right" to work, I answer this: they should think back. When they started their life and career, and that they were happy to find a job to begin building their life and entering adulthood, well, young people do have the same rights today to be able to enjoy the same opportunities. Unemployment was not really an issue after the second world war, for decades. Saying that it is a "right" to keep working, it is close to ignore that you are probably taking away possibilities of employment for your own children and grandchildren. You are taking away their potential for having their own family, a job, a career, a good life, even food in their plate! Are people sometimes selfish when they view retirement, without even realizing it? And are there not many many many things that you could enjoy after a life spent working? Waking up late, going for a nice walk, exercising, meeting with your friends, traveling, reading more books, starting new hobbies or putting more time into it, following your own pace to do things, and exactly do what you have never had the time or the opportunity to do before, without even remembering if we are Monday, Thursday, or Sunday! And if you still want to feel "useful" to society, you can volunteer, get involved on boards for local organizations, maybe start a new one, become a mentor for young people? Of course, one of the issues regarding this is that we are not equal regarding retirement. Not everybody has the same pension, and not everybody can see retirement in a comfortable way. But believe me, so far it is much better here than it is in Europe. I have been thinking for a while now that the decision of retiring has become a conscious, responsible, social act. By retiring, we also show and understand that we have to leave the room for the new generation so that they can have the same chances to make a good life just as our parents and grandparents did. So, am I hitting sensitive cords here, or am I making sense? I am looking forward to reading your answers!
  11. Do you (still) believe that having a degree will guarantee you a fulfilling career and a better salary? Or maybe you never believed in this, and you are one of these Richard Branson out there, who grew up in the most unusual and wild way that made you the adventurous and successful business person you are? Here is an interesting article about this topic: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/universityeducation/12125399/My-family-is-proof-that-you-dont-need-a-degree-to-succeed.html?fb_ref=Default As the economy is changing, so is the workplace, and the job market. What would be your strategies to keep your career going? What would be your resources if you wished to start a new career? Would you better be/stay an employee, or stay/become self-employed, or be the boss? What do/would you tell your children and grandchildren to make sure that they would do the right choices to become "successful"? To sum up: when it is about getting an education and a career, is university overrated... or not?
  12. Are we about to soon find out how to travel in space and time??? I have never been good in understanding physics but I can understand how important and exciting this new discovery is: http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-35524440 So for those of you who are good at physics, know about it, how do you welcome these important news? What are the ideas, deductions, potentials etc... that you see in this? And as I love movies, here is a link to the imdb page of the movie "Interstellar" that you could see (on Netflix). It is related to the subject of this post: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0816692/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_8 Physicists, scientists, dreamers, whoever you are, tell us what you see coming from this!
  13. "The Sessions" (2012) is a movie directed by Ben Lewin with John Hawkes, Helen Hunt, and William H. Macy. Inspired by a true story: "A man in an iron lung who wishes to lose his virginity contacts a professional sex surrogate with the help of his therapist and priest." (Source: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1866249/?ref_=nv_sr_1) This movie is available on Netflix and I watched it last week. This is a simple movie, well made (not "amazing") but the topic is interesting enough that it attracted my attention, of course. What I find particularly interesting is that the character played by Helen Hunt introduces herself as a "Sex Surrogate" the first time she meets with the character played by John Hawkes. She also mentions that she is not a pros-itute. But at the end of the day, what she offers and does makes no difference with what other ladies offer. If the term "Sex Surrogate" certainly fits the context of this movie, I find it a bit cold though. I wondered why/what makes her really different from any other lady that would do the same job as hers in another context, a more "usual one" let's say. But I have my ideas about it. If you have seen the movie, I would be interested to know your opinion about it, about this term versus the ones we would usually use here etc... Thank you! (p.s: I also wrote a post on my blog after viewing this movie, that can be read here http://www.miaadore.com/#!What-About-The-Concept-of-Body-Mind%E2%80%99s-Rights/c1zwm/56b2f77f0cf2b4e0b6193522 )

  15. I am so so so tempted to add this today: For f-ck sake, for once that ladies can have THE job in the world where they will ALWAYS be paid MORE THAN MEN, knowing all the unbalanced/unfair salaries out there between men and women, and a man still wants to complain about it?! Yeah, our price is our price. But if we want to be very practical about it and cut it down to how much it would cost minimally in an hour, why not trying this exercise? I am sure we will go OVER 300$/hour very quickly. Alright, here it goes: - A regular massage by a registered therapist or in a beauty spa by a non registered therapist, nothing else, is between 75 to 125$/hour and more. - The cost of paying personal company for people who need it (for example seniors or disabled people whose family pay for individuals to provide them with company, meaning talking with them only, not offering any care, just checking if they are OK): minimum of 15$/hour in Ontario. - The cost of education that distinguishes a lady (I tend to think that we are not stupid, whether we have diplomas or not. Intelligence and an elegant attitude, as well as having the ability to entertain guests is not related to studies we might have done or not, but if we have, it is another cost that can be considered in trying to "making the price right"). Most of us have degrees or are studying. So the cost of having stimulating conversations with a lady thanks to education (sometimes compared by some gentlemen as talking to a therapist): minimum of 120$/hr - The cost of location: MINIMUM 200$/night. Minimum. If we talk about upscale location, it goes up fast. - The cost of personal care: although we are beautiful, we do not wake up with our hair, make up, nails, skin looking nice and smelling good. We need to take care of that. Hair dresser, nail salon, tanning salon, beauty spa, products, perfume etc... Name it. These services/items are very expensive. Let's say: 200$/month minimum - The cost of clothes and shoes and lingerie, bags (you do not want us to wear plastic bags, don't you?) very expensive. You don't want to see us with the same outfits all the time? No: minimum of 200$/month to renew wardrobe and lingerie. Just one piece of lingerie can cost 200$ ! - The cost of a gym membership (we have to take care of our body!): let's keep it simple, if we go to the YMCA: minimum 55$/month - The cost of special toys, accessories, anything related to play and protection: these stuff are expensive, especially if we specialize the type of games and toys: another 200$ minimum /month (my personal minimum expenses in this category) - Cost of hygiene products at your disposal, laundry to offer you fresh and clean towels, bed sheets, and buy new ones if needed etc...: 80$/month (my personal minimum expenses in this category). - Drinks or appetizers that can be offered by ladies to gentlemen in some meetings: I sometimes offer crackers, cookies, drinks. Let's keep it minimal with non alcoholic drinks: 30$/month (my personal minimum expenses in this category). - The cost of professional photo shoots if a lady does so: the average cost for such a photo shoot session ("package") is 1200$ (I have looked on a few websites, this is the average cost I noticed, it can be more or less, of course) - The cost of advertising: a minimum of 50$/month. It can go over 200$/month and much more depending on when, how, where the lady advertises, and the frequency/numbers of ads purchased. - The cost of travels, to go to you in the same city, or if a lady is touring. Between plane and train tickets, or gas, it can go up very quickly: varies a lot from a lady to another, obviously. From her rent cost if she hosts only, to several thousands of dollars in a month if she travels all the time. - The cost of communication tools and time involved in communication with you (not only "you", of course...): monthly phone package, website, internet etc... Hard to put a price on this as it can vary a lot but, it is more money again. My minimum cost: around 115$/month, not counting the time put into communicating with gentlemen. I must be forgetting some other costs here for sure! Add all these costs, and you will understand that it is not only about getting up in the morning, putting panties on, and posting an ad randomly somewhere and voilà! Nope. It does not work this way. So, yes, how surprising that it takes money to make money! But most most most of all: what is the real cost of one hour spent with someone who will take care of you wonderfully and make you feel special? How much for this? We give the most precious of ourselves at many levels. Breaking it down to money only does not even cover it all! And about expressing an opinion: it is not about the fact that the OP expressed an opinion in the first place. It is about HOW the OP expressed this opinion. Very different! Having a degree in communication, and being proud of it, I believe that it makes a huge difference when considering discussing such matters.
  16. Why? Why not. Why did you choose 300$ + ? Why didn't you start, let's say, at 500$ + ? You are not to ignore that in some "high spheres of society" some people would smile at your question. For some people, 100$ is a lot. For other people 5000$ is nothing. This is relative. Does a higher price guarantee that you will have a "better service"? No. And what does "better service" mean to you? If what a lady charges is too much for your budget, as suggested by previous members, move on or wait until you can afford a visit. If all communication is done politely with respect on both sides, nobody will be hurt in the process. And by the way, about the ladies who have a website, they usually have information and rates on it. So, it could avoid you some surprises, wouldn't it? So, tell us, Dear OP, what was the real point of your thread? Fun provocation, just curious and amused to see our reactions, or you woke up with a really bad mood because sometimes the world does not make sense to you? No offense...
  17. "The Wolfpack". If you have not seen this documentary yet, I urge you to do it. Amazing documentary. No words for it. I am sad that it is not nominated for an Oscar (but being nominated for an Oscar is more complex than it seems). The best documentary I have seen in my life (so far). http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2415458/?ref_=nv_sr_1

I love this one. Looking forward to seeing the others!
  20. I just watched a documentary series produced by Chelsea Handler. She might not be everyone's cup of tea but these documentaries are very well produced, interesting, intelligent, and both serious and funny. She mixes moments with her family, friends, interviews with professionals or people in the community, travels to experience things or to get answers to some questions etc... I strongly recommend you watch them! There are only 4 episodes on Netflix (is there more? Hope there is!): "Chelsea Does Marriage", "Chelsea Does Silicon Valley", "Chelsea Does Racism", "Chelsea Does drugs".
  21. Watching a series of TV Documentaries on Netflix with Chelsea Handler. It is both interesting and funny. Just watched "Chelsea does marriage" and really liked it. Now watching "Chelsea does Silicon Valley". Should be informative and educational!
