CBC News is running an on-line poll:

 

"How do you want the Ontario Appeal Court to rule on prostitution laws?"

 

Of approximately 4000 voters so far, the results are:

 

70% Uphold the lower court decision and decriminalize prostitution.

13% Overturn the lower court decision and restore the laws.

14% It doesn't really matter. This is going to the Supreme Court.

2% I'm not sure.

It should be interesting to see how much public opinion will weigh on a new Conservative majority regarding this issue. Especially if it goes to the Supreme Court.

I hope we don't, but expect to hear, that the 'Harper Government believes it is in the interest of Canadians' to keep the current laws in place or write more stringent ones. And now he can do that without getting fired for it...

I voted to uphold court decision even though I believe the current laws are best however, out of solidarity I voted such. Also to oppose Harper lol.

If the new law is saying that prostitution is now legal, will the government try and find a way to tax this industry....

If so that would mean that the government expect the women to keep track of the clients and transactions and could lose all discretion that we currently have. I could be wrong!

But if you think of it like a contractor, that is hired to do some mudding and taping for a home owner, they usually like to have some money under the table, but the government still obliges them to have some legitimate invoices. So a cretin percentage of their projects are on the books with the names and addresses of the clients they gave the service to.

IMHO, the government will try and reduce the exchange of money for sex by legalizing it and forcing all the men whom have a wife, to give out their names and personal information so that they will think twice about seeing a SP!

This is just what passed through my head when this the new law was proposed, and is probably just a crazy conspiracy theory!!! But I can see this happening, if it does, I predict a huge reduction in clients in this industry.

The industry is already taxed under the heading of Small Business Owner.

 

AFAIK there is no requirements for a business owner to track who paid and receipt given. Think road-side berry stall or chip-truck.

 

Receipt is really for customer dispute resolution and proof of purchase.

 

Should personal data be collected it will be protected under the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act.

 

Further more any personal data can be atomized.

I'd like to make two points.

 

The use of polls in assessing attitudes and setting public policy is a rather suspect way of dealing with issues. Ask the same questions with a CBC audience versus one done by the Sun media and you would probably get quite different results. It has to do with the demographics of the listening public, so in the end the results have to be taken with a grain of salt.

 

The last comment about taxation doesn't really have any bearing, taxes are inevitable and really have nothing to do with legal policy. Revenue Canada really doesn't care about where the earnings come from, and that information is confidential and not open to access by anyone other than the department.

Prostitution has always been legal. No new laws or lack of the disputed laws change that.

Agencies are already required to keep track of this information. (this may be a city of vancouver biz license requirement, not necessarily nationwide). You don't really expect an agency is going to send an escort out to you and not have information recorded about where they are being sent, your name/number/address and the duration of the call do you?

I was thrown off a bit by the typo of cretin in place of certain lol. I thought it kind of appropriate when discussing govt, taxes, and so on.

I'm not sure what you mean by forcing married men to give out their info, since married or not, if it is a requirement. In general, for screening purposes, many US escorts require a lot more info on their clients than most Canadian sps do. Its illegal in the US, so it kind of contradicts the statement that full legalization would require more information lol. Its necessary to screen fully in the US to avoid LE stings.

I think you might be underestimating the desire to see sps will far outweigh any inconveniences. What I predict would happen with decriminalization and regulation is that more people will feel encouraged to try it out. They won't have the worry of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Similar to strip clubs, guys will have no legal issues to be concerned about when visiting a brothel or incall for example. The curiosity factor alone will actually increase business, as the current clientele also feels a bit more relaxed about the setup.

 

I think you'd be surprised how many full names and phone #s sps typically get in a day. It makes the ones who hide behind blocked #s and fake phones look pretty sketchy, and somewhat sneaky, imo.
