What Did You Want to be When You Grew Up and Is It Anything Close to What You Do Now?

Thought this would make for an interesting thread as well as a nice ice breaker. When I was growing up I wanted to be anything and everything!! I would change my choice weekly from astronaut, to interior decorator, to actress, to scientist, to writer, and even to movie producer lol. I eventually became partial to veterinarian. I love animals!! But by the time college time rolled around, I had decided that the schooling would be way too long and that it would be very heart breaking and too emotional for me to have to eventually place down suffering animals. So I opted for finance and accounting in college instead. All in all, no I am not doing anything near what I wanted growing up. But I wouldn't change it for the world. I love what I do!! Ironically when I was in grade 7, a male friend of mine told me he was absolutely convinced that I would grow up to be a porn star!! Lol. Being 12 years old at the time and very shy, I shook it off thinking ewww gross. Imagine how things change hehe ;-).

 

Now you have me curious. While growing up, did you have any wild dreams or ambitions. If so, how close are you to them today? In my unique situation, I truly believe that I changed what I wanted based on me as a young woman changing and also growing with more knowledge. Enough about me, now let's hear from you ;-)

When I was in high school, I wanted to get in to computers. I started off in the old days with IBM mainframes. And had one of the first Apple II computers, which I still have. I managed to get my degree in computer science and have had a long full filling career in the IT field, seeing all the changes in technology in the last 30 years. I still have many years ahead of me and am amaze at fast the internet and cell phones have come. With 3d technology in imagery and printing, the future seems only limited by one's imagination. Seeing what is going on now, I would not have been able to imagine this when I first started. I am awaiting to see what is yet to come.

 

I had wanted to meet many beautiful and sexy women when I was younger, but because I was shy, this did not happen :(

But since finding Cerb 3 years ago, I have met many beautiful women and have had experiences that I could never imagine. Each experience seems to be better then the next. Even had a duo. So in the next couple of years, I hope to experience new sexy experiences with the many beautiful women of Cerb.

When I was very little I was fascinated by the garbage collectors who use to pass by the house I grew up every week and pick up the trash. Seriously, that is what I wanted to be when I was 4! Unfortunately, life took a bad turn and I became an civil engineer. Damn it! :D

When I was growing up I wanted to be a pilot in the Canadian military, flying CC130 Hercules

Unfortunately, a little thing like wearing glasses stopped that dream dead in it's tracks

I had some time in the Canadian Forces mostly Reserves but time with the Reg Force in W. Germany, and wanted a career in the military in the Armoured Corps. Something appealed to me about life in the outdoors going around in Leopard tanks. But a medical curve thrown at me made going into the military not possible.

So I went to university, and upon graduation went into a law enforcement field, not rewarding or fulfilling but pays the bills, including disposable income to see companions

I just wanted to add that it was around this last year when I learned that places like massage parlours existed. I was like no wayyyyy!! I couldn't believe it!! I didn't judge tho. It was both very cool to know and very surprising. And if someone told me even a year ago that I would be an MA, I don't think I would have believed them. Now that I am here I've been truly having a blast meeting new people and pampering them with pleasure ;-).

I wanted to be a helicopter pilot after high school. Unfortunately I couldn't afford the private school.

The military wouldn't have me due to childhood asthma.

I took photography in school and have been somewhat involved with optics ever since.

 

I'm certainly not doing but I want to do as I still don't know what that is.

When I was a kid I wanted to be a stuntman. Your basic prat falls or slapstick kind of stunts. My peak came when I could master falling down a flight of stairs to make a grand entrance.

 

I ended up working mostly in the construction field and perhaps my previous 'stuntman' experience has saved me when I have had the odd accident at height on the job.

 

It may have helped when I have had the odd accident at drink as well.

Like everyone else, growing up I've had many of the changes in what I wanted to do everything from being a scientist to an actor to a psychologist but by high school graduation had decided on finance. I was following the path I was hoping to, in finance, for the better part of many years overcoming a few minor road bumps along the way but being successful overall.

 

However a few years ago I was a victim of corporate restructuring and made a job change into something completely different which followed other courses took in university. So I guess I got a second chance to do what I wanted :-)

As a young child I was in the same boat as 2Legit who posted about wanting to be a garbage man. With some of the places and bosses I've formerly worked for in the restaurant biz I sometimes wonder if said places/bosses had the same dream and never quite grew out of it? Which is why I refer to them as being in the FORMER category

 

As I grew older, and testosterone started to play a larger role, I decided I should be a professional wrestler. Seems my intelligence may have peaked as a pre-pubescent, at least I got hair in strange places out of the deal!

 

As I have grown as an adult I have decided that I should not let my career or chosen profession define me as much as it has in the past. I doubt I'll stay in the same field, but it'll do for now

When I was young I wanted to be a superhero. Now I still do, then again I never really grew up much. Hehe

 

I could never decide what I wanted to do. Even in my senior year in high school I didn't know what path to take. Being good with numbers I ended up taking accounting. Never really worked out, couldn't find anything with a descent salary at the time I was making more money as a manager at a store. I eventually quit and ended up in construction, now I dream of someday starting my own construction company.

As a child I told my mother I wanted to be a race car driver or a priest.

She felt to were diametrically opposite pursuits.

As a child growing up in the UK I really wanted to be a footballer (soccer player for the colonials! LOL). Once I started to get a bit older the acting bug took hold of me, but then the Royal Navy took hold of me and that became my path in life! :D

I was also one another young man wanting to a be a Fighter Pilot in the Air Force.

As well, eyesight went south.. so went the career in the RCAF..

I studied in the geographic field, but never put it to use due to economics times, jobs were scarce..

So I gained a variety of experience, retails sale at first, then the travel industry, followed by 9 years as Mr. Mom.., then returned in Travel in the IT domain... I followed life path as best I could for the times I was faced with,

and ya know what.. Life has been pretty good to me..!!

growing up in small town Ontario, I like everyone else wanted to be a pro hockey player, I was able to play at a high level, and was lucky enough to get my education paid through hockey. Now I work as a consultant and I love it.

I can remember when I was a young kid wanting to be a super spy with a decoder ring and everything. Early in my university days I concluded I was going to become a United Methodist (United Church here in Canada) minister. I had a seminary picked out to the point that I had their course catalogue, was working on figuring out how to pay for it, and was assisting a pastor in conducting alternative worship services in small churches in small towns in the area.

 

Clearly, that didn't happen!

 

Years later I took a course in Electronics Engineering. I was recruited out of school by a company doing something that we had spent part of one afternoon studying. I spent the rest of my professional career in that field. I enjoyed it, got to see the world, and it brought me to Canada.

 

Now I spend my working time doing something totally unrelated to all of that and love it. Now the world comes to see me.

 

The OPs original question is something I've always been curious about, too. I've made it a point to ask people along the way and found very few people is the same career for which they'd studied. I'm looking forward to the other responses in this thread.

As a young hatchling I grew up watching my heroes on television. I wanted to be an astronaut after watching the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions. That was replaced by secret agent after watching The Saint, Mission Impossible, I Spy and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. I grew out of the spy business and graduated to LA Law and The Lawyers. The dream of being someone who screws people for money stayed with me throughout high school and college. Higher learning broadened my horizons. I considered a teaching career until I found out what teachers earn! Back to the dream of law went I. Then I graduated.

 

After school, reality took hold. I found work as a means to earn money to live & play. Despite my education, I drifted from occupation to occupation. I've been a cab driver, a bar tender, a private detective (my spy fantasy), a truck driver, dish washer, porn store cashier, shipper, buyer, materials manager, planner, systems analyst, financial analyst and finally I returned to my most enduring aspiration, the law. I got into commercial law and became a contracts manager.

 

The path I took was circuitous but in the end it led me back to the law. I don't litigate but I negotiate. And that, to me, is the next best thing.

Growing up I was "shy" which turned out to actually be social anxiety..but that didn't exist at the time....:icon_sad:

 

As a consequence I spent a lot of time alone watching TV and movies. As a teenager I was captivated by all the cute girls on the screen and decided that if I was ever going to meet them I would have to become an actor.

 

I signed up for theatre school which I wish I could describe how torturous that was for a kid with super crazy anxiety....classes were three hours long and twice a week which meant that I submitted myself to 6 hrs a week of constant extreme anxiety attacks...or shyness as they called it back then lol...plus 6 hrs a day of school...oh boy...

 

But I was stubborn and I stuck with it and I became a professional actor...I was actually pretty good too...and after about 8-10 years of classes and profession study I beat the anxiety as well. To the point where it doesn't really effect my life anymore. Except when I put myself in completely new situations...there are some of you who know what I'm talking about...:b

 

Unfortunately, the practicalities of life got in the way and now I'm an accountant...but I'm much better off for pursuing my childhood dream and realizing it.

Despite always being at the top of my class and winning all of the awards for Math, Chemistry and Physics at my Montreal High School, I wanted to be the lead guitarist for a rock band. I play a pretty good lead guitar and have been on stage at a few bars in town and a few times when I was a university student. I even played Van Halen's "Eruption" (or my slightly butchered version of it) at my wedding reception. But I'm an engineer by trade and a real estate speculator.
