Guest Ou**or**n Report post Posted March 13, 2014 Windows 8.1 with the Start8 utility to give a properly functioning start button is perfectly usable way to move to Windows 8 without any of the 'Metro' crap. That utility allows you disable the 'charms' and hide the Metro apps on the start menu. The result is your familiar desktop and start menu along with speed improvements of Windows 8. If you're buying a new computer and you're forced to go Windows 8 then I'd highly suggest making sure it's 8.1 and using this approach. Both my laptop and Surface Pro are touch so that may be why I have taken to it. For the legacy software the classic desktop is just a tap away. 6dave9 4008 Report post Posted March 13, 2014 Thanks everyone for your input.. Glad to hear that I am not the only with Win8 nausea.... I did update to 8.1.. looks all the same to me..!?! The 'Start button' at bottom left isn't at all like to former XP or 7.. just flips me to the Win8 sort-of desktop with apps blocks... What gets me the most is the constant menus that slide in at any given moment from the right while trying to use the touch pad.. or you are randomly flipped to your desktop at any given moment again... How much are you willing to pay for XP support? Most want to pay nothing. It costs Microsoft a huge sum of money to keep XP on life support with no return on their investment. How many 13 year old products are there that the manufacturer still supports for free? Don't hold out on upgrading as doing so could be costly if your system is later compromised - at least upgrade to Windows 7. CudaMan 120 Report post Posted March 14, 2014 You're right Windows 8 is a mess, BUT, you can make it a bit better by adding "Classic Start Menu" it's free and works nice. Finally defected to Apple and won't turn back. Hardware works as it should and software is simple and easy, and as fstop says, free now. Also has internal photo/video editing and an online beta which is fully compatible with Office. Never going back now! P.S. I hate you Samsung....you and your shitty tech support!
