Studio 110 by Sophia 150333 Report post Posted February 16, 2013 My first trip to Cuba....I have now been 8 times, and going for the 9th tis March:) My first time there was Christmas eve:) Was not sure if I would like to be away for Christmas, but thought it may be interesting to see the "spirit of Christmas" would follow me there or not.... I will have to say it sure did!! I managed to bring with me $1,000 and basically gave it away to those in need. I went to a small Catholic cathedral, for Christmas Mass, and there sitting a peu was this little young man around 11yrs, he had his younger brother of 4 years in his arms. No shoes on their feet, ripped cloths and the sweetest biggest brown eyes I have ever seen! I slipped to him 100.00 in convertible Paso as a gift to his family:) He looked at me with such surprise and big tears began to fall...mine and his! In the little bit of Spanish that I speak, told him to go straight home to Mama and Papa with that and not to let anyone know about it...and he did! A few days later, he seen me walking inn the market. He got his Mother and Father to come meet me. To this day, we remain Friends and are welcomed with open arms and open hearts! I love my Cuban family:) Cant wait to see them in March! Just another thought to add, I also met this awesome lady, I asked her if it makes her sad that she can not travel as we do, her answer was so enlightening for me...she said" But I do travel....through all of you I see the world!" That will never fade from my memory!

spud271 47779 Report post Posted February 16, 2013 My favorites would be Mallorca and Ibiza. Been there a few times over the years and have always had a blast!!! Great partying, amazing music and total sexual debauchery!!! On top of that the beaches are world class, the surfing is pretty decent and there are some pretty amazing restaurants.
drlove 37204 Report post Posted February 16, 2013 Jamaica... I love the culture and the people. One thing really sticks out in my mind the most - the locals are incredibly trusting, likely since they value honour. I was on the beach one day at the resort, and there were some locals selling their wares - handmade carvings of various animals etc.. I was amazed at how detailed the carvings were, and marveled at how long and painstaking a process it must be to complete each one. This was their livelyhood; their way of supporting themselves and their families. Anyhow, I was going for a dip in the ocean and just had my swim trunks on - no money with me at all. I told one of the vendors how much I loved their carvings, and told them I would be back later to buy some when I had my wallet with me. What happened next completely floored me, and I remember it like it was yesterday: The lady said (in a thick Jamaican accent): "No problem mon...I tell you what - you go and take the carvings, mon; you come back later and give me the money." I was taken aback completely. here was a complete stranger willing to trust another complete stranger to her (me) and take me at my word that I would be back to pay her, after I had already received the merchandise in advance. Again, such an act speaks volumes about the kind of people they are. Imagine something like that ever happening here in Canada! I won't be holding my breath on that one...
747LeftSeat 699 Report post Posted February 17, 2013 Most memorable vacation was a week on Lord Howe Island in Australia. It was a last minute decision destination with a (sadly no longer here) lady. The snorkelling and diving and beaches and food and company were just fabulous. Been back several times. Vancouver Island is a favourite camping/touring destination of mine. The beauty of the island is stunning.
Winnipegcub 21293 Report post Posted February 17, 2013 2 very different kinds of trips. But luvs my travels and vacations. 1. Many years ago a buddy of mine moved to different cities in Canada. We chatted and stayed connected. We both loved hockey. A few years later we decided to meet up in NY in late March. We had return flights in 2 weeks time, lots of cash and an NHL hockey schedule. We spent 2 weeks riding Amtrak up and down the East US Coast taking in hockey games. It was a tonne of fun. We had no real plans but the next game. We would really come out of a New Jersey game and pull out the schedule. "Holy Crap Montreal is in Boston tomorrrow night"...and away we would go. 2. At the end of my Masters I did a study tour in China. It was great but planned with lots of visits, etc..After I needed some 'me' time. So headed for 2 weeks to Cambodia and Thailand. Among the best experiences of my life and the most gracious people and beautiful country.

Capital Hunter 18263 Report post Posted February 17, 2013 (edited) Very interesting reads in this thread. I keep on hearing about travelling to Cuba and regions around it but never travelled myself there. I always wondered what would I do there. As for travelling when I was child up to teenage years I travelled a lot as I was born in a well off family (before monsters took all away). I travelled to Paris, London, Venice, Frankfort, snowy flower loving switzerland and Eastern Europe (former Yugoslavia, Bulgaria) and usually visiting museums (best being Louvre and British Museums and Madame Tussaud especially enjoyable) and parks (hide park). Paris being best and most expensive. Mind you glad I travelled to these areas in childhood. Very expensive now Wouldn't afford it now in a million years!!. NotchJohnson 214123 Report post Posted February 22, 2013 Cruises are great as long as you stay stranded on the ocean for 5 days without power and running water. Just saying. I have traveled most of the Caribbean and Central America and it all depends on what you are looking for. If you want shopping St-Maarten is good and Cancun, Jamaica. If you want guaranteed sun Costa Rica with almost 40 degree of heat everyday and no rain, you will see monkeys just like we see deers and racoons in Canada. They also have some dangerous animals similar as in Africa because of the temperature ex. deadly snakes, pumas, jaguars, leopards etc. You can visit live volcano, amazing water falls and even swim under them, they truly have beautiful animals and landscape. Mind you I visited during dry season which is from Nov.-Apr. I was not that impressed with Dominican Republic weather and activities, but I must admit that the Dominican girls have an amazing round bum that I wanted to touch. So many more places I could name but too big of a list.
Phaedrus 209521 Report post Posted February 23, 2013 Must admit, I don't tend to go back to places. The lure of the unexplored always beats the familiar... Having said that... I really loved Vietnam. Beautiful country, fascinating history, friendly people.
Mikeyboy 27133 Report post Posted February 23, 2013 Just got back from the Bahamas. Guana cay. Amazing. I'd rather be shoveling sand on the beach than snow in the driveway!
