I really don't know what to make of this yet except to say that it is very amusing many Canadians. His antics have certainly provided me (with my somewhat demented sense of humour) no end of amusement.

Didn't Harper say "you won't recognize Canada when I'm through with it"? Gotta at least give the guy credit for stating his agenda. You may not like what he's done or how he did it but he never said change wasn't coming. Just as Pierre Trudeau was accused of being domineering and polarizing by the righty's then, Harper is accused of similar actions by lefty's now.

 

As for Trump, his nomination would be the best thing that could happen to the Democratic party. He may be a strait shooting, plain spoken politician but he's still a polarizing ignoramus in my books.

I find him despicable . Ego and more ego is what allows him to speak as he does, not some higher sense of virtue or honesty. He likes to hear himself speak.

 

On one hand, his running is probably one of the best things democrats could hope for since he wouldn't (I hope!) have a true chance of winning the general election. And if he decided to run as an independent, all it would do is steal enough votes from the right to guarantee a democratic victory.

 

On the otherhand, I find it a depressing commentary on the States that enough people take him seriously and support him that he is any kind of contender.

 

Confidence is hard not to admire...even if the confidence is just to spit out prejudice, intolerance, and vague promises and patriotic lines that, when you look for any substance, turn out to be empty.

 

Sure, candor and confidence are great and entertaining. But someone's beliefs and deeds will always mean more to me, and I find his too abhorrent to be overly entertained or impressed by exaggerated bluster.

 

And that, I suppose, is my own "say what I think" moment. :)

He craves attention. A lot of what he says is just to provoke reaction. It's easy to shoot your mouth off if you don't face any consequences.

 

He doesn't want the job, the daily grind would bore him. He would not get his hands dirty with mundane tasks like tax policy or treaties with countries no one recognises.

 

This whole "campaign" is nothing but an advertisement for the Trump brand. Trump clothes, casinos, residential developments, all will benefit.

To be honest I don't think he was in charge. He was front man for Cheney and his pack of thugs.

 

America is in a hell of a jam. Hilary is no better than Bush but nobody is asking her the tough questions. She says she will go after the rich bankers of Wall Street who made billions from the collapse. But she is getting millions of dollars in contributions from those same bankers. She isn't going after them.

 

America has a ruling class, maybe a tenth of the top percentile. Nothing anyone else does or thinks matters. Sad but ugly truth. Yeah yeah go occupy a park or Wall Street, nobody in power gives a shit. Nothing has changed.

 

There is very little actual reasoned debate in the states. Nothing but two opposite sides yelling at each other. No direct responses to direct questions. Look at what passes for political discussion on American TV, no debate just people shouting meaningless talking points.

 

It's here too. Listen to CBC for their Saturday morning political analysis. PC mps will stick to speaking points no matter what. It is sickening that someone elected to represent the people shows loyalty to Harper first and none to their constituents.

In the coming campaign they will stick to a script. Ask a question about the tar sands? Tory response will be something about Trudeau smoking pot or some other insult.

 

Sad to say informed debate is long gone. We have pathetic governments and nobody to blame but ourselves.

I think some of Trumps political popularity has to do with his willingness to bring up "taboo" topics like illegal immigration and the like. He's pandering to our baser urges but some like to have their prejudices confirmed. Myself, I would rather have someone speak their mind than to never know what they really think. A lot of people correctly sense that most politicians are carefully packaged entities designed not to offend. When someone steps outside that mold it's like "he said what"?

 

Have you ever met someone who radiates confidence, is outspoken, opinionated. People gravitate towards that. Compare that to the milk toast blandness of someone who's designed not to offend. Wake me up when the passionate guy comes back!

 

I may disagree with Trump but the other guys, I'm not even sure what their handlers want them to stand for.

Anyways, they seemed to believe that good old Donald is cock blocking the Republicans and trying to send the votes Hillary's way. Well, the republicans have a huge field of candidates at this time. I view the Donald as a huckster, knowing that he really doesn't have any chance of getting the nomination. Ergo, he can be rather outrageous, and when he does finally withdraw he'll endorse someone on his side of the political spectrum. I am sure he'll walk away with a bunch of IOU's in his back pocket.

Interestingly enough, Donald Trump's presence, and domination of other GOP possibles, almost assures that Hillary Clinton will become the first female American President.

 

I think this is a good thing in many ways. I'm not so keen about the "stand by your man" martyr bit she played regarding her husband Bill, who, regardless of how charming, thought he could lie and BS his way with the American people, and who has pretty much succeeded in doing that. In truth, Hillary probably had her own ambitions in mind all along. And maybe that's ok.

I think Trump running is a good thing. Late night talk show hosts have had a vacuum of material from the Republicans for their comedy bits since Dubya stepped down. It will be refreshing to have another laughing stock for the rest of the world to point at and giggle. Just like old times. ;)

I know that we think that our election period is long but be glad that we are not Americans. It's still a year before the two parties there actually choose their candidates for President and then longer after that before the election, and their debates begin tonight.

 

We are so far away from actual decisions being made but at the moment the contradiction between Mr. Trump being viewed by many as a joke candidate and the fact that he is so far ahead in the polls may be telling?

 

I am reiterating I suppose, but he is the only candidate that Americans are being exposed to from either party who shows passion and whose words they believe. It probably does not even matter right now what those words are because average people are so tired of hearing only canned comments, the party line, political correctness and insincerity.

 

He might be a joke, but, he ain't no joke.

 

As an aside, I expect that in tonight's debate in Canada Elizabeth May will be the only one that shows passion and sincerity. She can be our Donald trump with a great deal more credibility.

Keep in mind he is ahead in the polls that are made up of those Republicans that are registered to vote in the primaries. That is a big difference than what he would likely poll across the general populace.

 

I do agree with you that I'm so glad our own election period is shorter. I'm even a little annoyed we're having to spend the extra money for the longer one we are having! (long for us anyway)

Well its now six months since this thread was started and the joke of Donald Trump continues to stay in first place on the Republican side and the Republican hierarchy seems almost resigned that he has a good shot at getting the nomination.

 

Still a long ways to go though.

 

That entire race is rather scary. Imagine President Donald Trump or maybe even worse, President Ted Cruz. I sure hope they don't send him back to Canada. The right wing evangelicals seem to have a lot of control and that scares the crap out of me.

 

Hillary also seems to be being challenged by Bernie Sanders. His presence is yet another indication that people are just entirely fed up with the political system, as we are in Canada.
