Hello there and welcome to CERB, thanks for the honest up front note. My first piece of advice is to go into the "new to this" section which you already found and read the sticky notes at the top. This is great information for anyone new to the industry. It provides a lot of great details about contact, what to expect etc. This will give you a solid basis and a little more comfort. If there is something you need to be more specific for your understanding, ask about it. This way you don't get overwhelmed or bogged down. Next I would recommend doing your homework. Find ladies that appeal to you and read their posts and website and get a feel for who they might be in person. When you find someone you like, contact them via their preferred method. The most important step for you would be contact. This is when it's important to be up front an honest about what you might need or issues you might have in regards to the social interaction. While autism is more well known, unless someone is dealing with it regularly or aware of the variances, they need to be informed so they can help make your experience the best for you. While Miss Jessica's wording may ruffle feathers, the intention and willingness to take action is undeniable. The providers that have had the opportunity to study human rights and it complexities have valuable insight into the social and legal issues of the vulnerable and I appreciate their attempts to explain it to those of us who are not as fluent in the nuanced language and concepts. Anything that will broaden horizons is a good thing. What I'm always amazed at is how as a collective we agree on the changes that need to be made but how often the intellectual vocal activists chose to criticize action taken that doesn't directly reflect their chosen paths of action. I have lived my professional life believing that being open about what I do with the civilian population actively helps remove stigma surrounding our industry one person at a time. I don't need people to become pro sex work by the end of the conversation to know that I have planted a seed that will grow, slowly entering their thoughts and challenging their belief systems about my work. By providing a face, giving a voice to those of us that society never sees, doesn't even know we exist; I challenge the stigmas they believe directly. I feel those of us who the general public can relate to have a responsibility to put our experiences out there because in fact we are already a part of their lives and they will relate to us in some way, no matter how small. I may not get a warm welcome initially but it's a start. I know they'll respond eventually if I'm patient and don't dismiss their beliefs but simply open a dialogue that allows an exchange of information. Every inch forward where ever it happens is still valuable forward movement imo. The anti's and media parade the victims of violence to the public as the face of prostitution and the public have nothing else to compare it to. They don't hear from us, the quiet majority. We have no public face, no identifiable voice, only activists that the general public seldom take seriously. It's not the anti's we need to sway but the undecided. Giving those valuable undecided something to compare the horror stories to, our experiences is what I believe will help sway those who have yet to make a decision and that is key in starting to shift the stigma away from consensual sex work. While Jessica's approach may not be considered the most effect course of action by some, it is at the very least a starting point that we can build on. I see no harm in supporting it along with the other actions currently employed. We need a multi faceted approach because society is multi faceted and reaching out to them where they are consciously at this moment is the only way to ensure we are heard. I believe that if we had a professional presence, one that showed the general public that this is an industry and there are many within it that have chosen to work in it, it will help us. We need to show them we are responsible business owners, tax paying citizens and good neighbours, giving them informaiton that will go a long way to influencing them to let go of the stigmas they have been taught to believe is key. The vulnerable will not suffer because we up our public presence, they will benefit. As providers we know the vulnerable need to be included and we do not minimize their experiences but at the same time, their experiences does not negate ours... cat

My compliments to all about both the letter, and the thoughtful responses. I do believe that it is important to point out that the overwhelming majority in this industry are there by choice and that most do not fall into the category of "victim" that MacKay has grouped all of you into. I agree that it is important not to create our own classes, although I don't believe that this was the intention of the letter. I do believe that there are real victims in the industry, such as those who have been trafficked against their will. This is argument that the Conservatives will keep falling back on, even though they know as well as we do that there is nothing in the new legislation to address this beyond what is already in place. It is important however to make it clear that these people are the exception, and not the rule and that the new laws will simply serve to put the rest of you at risk, instead of helping anything. Frankly I'm tired of what Peter Mackay thinks is best for me. While I agree with the notion that there should not be any type of hierarchy where sex work is concerned, I do think that those who do this for a living and are happy with their line of work should be heard. While no job is perfect and everyone has their moments, I'm content with what I do for a living and this is about legislation, NOT moral legislation! I will be writing a letter based on the fact that I have a right to voice my opinion not just as a sex worker but a Canadian citizen. I don't believe in different sets of legislation for different types of sex workers because at the end of the day we are all providing the same service. However, I do agree that our experiences need to be told to show such people as Joy Smith that we cannot all be painted with the same brush regarding stigmatization. No two sex workers are the same but the Conservative government seems to think so. I encourage other ladies to write a letter in order to be heard. Let's not make this a debate on street workers v.s. As an eight year member on the board I can tell you it has always been Ottawa, Winnipeg and the East Coast who have been the biggest contributors to the board. Over the last couple of years there has been a significant increase in contributions from members in both Kingston and Thunder Bay. Even though this is the only national board, we have always struggled to get members from all area of Canada to contribute to CERB. I will forever try to encourage members from all areas of the country to contribute here. The C stands for "Canadian", don't complain there isn't information on your area if you are not contributing yourself. Happy hobbying! :D

thanks cat. this post has lifted my spirits a little more. the site has grown so large that I really can't do it on my own and I have been pushing myself this last year to a breaking point. people are constantly complaining and everyone seams to feel they need to tell me how to do things. most people do not consider that they are just one person demanding my time with frivolous complaints, whining and my favorite... redundant bitching (when they just repeat themselves over and over than get pissed off when I tell them where to go or remove them) with the site growing so large we have 10 times more spammers (you rarely see these as I remove them before you ever see them... only a few get by recentlybecause some exploit exists that has not been patched yet that allows the spammers to circumvent the moderation queue) .. I would estimate 300+ spam posts are removed each month. title infractions.... we don't want the site to lookk like cl with all the crazy post titles trying to out do the next one and gain the most attention... so i have very specific rules to stop this and i use to take the time to pm each person and tell them what they did wrong... i found that even when i took the time people would ignore the pm and continue to break the rules so now i just delete the post and give them a infraction with a link to the rules.. I get people every day wasting my time asking me to elaborate on what they did wrong... did they read the link with the rules??? NO... They are just wasting my time. about 300 posts a month break this rule and more than 1/2 of them break the rule over and over again. This is disrespectful and these people do not deserve to use the site so I just keep deleting the ad posts and eventually just remove them. if they are literate enough to post an ad they can dam well read the rules or they are not welcome here. when I suspend someone (especially a SP or a male member with 50+ posts) i get people PM me (who only hear one side of the story) demanding I let them back or telling me I was wrong or calling me a dictator. These people run to the other sites and tell everyone how horrible I am (and really that did not bother me in the past but now its getting a little annoying).. FINALLY... we have those idiots who post shit like "I am affraid to post on cerb because I will get in trouble" or "I know the rule is... hopefully the mod does not remove me" or the really big idiots who want to fight with me on the site and don't think I have the balls to kick them off!! Democracy is rife with "what ifs". Who moderates who? Who is to be trusted to be impartial and unbiased? This is an online, virtual, anonymous community. I would not want to be in charge of finding anyone perfect enough to meet the requirements of monitoring this board, as there is not one participant that doesn't have biases and self interest at hand, while still pleasing the masses that seem to demand their perception of perfection instead of practical application. Given the pettiness, immaturity and nonsense I have seen on the board lately, I would gladly choose to have MOD continue as always and permanently ban the whiners, complainers and shit disturbers. The manipulation and games would push anyone over the fragile edge. I know many "valued" participants would be gone but it would give CERB a fresh start and I for one would be glad to see them go. MOD is constantly taken for granted by both hobbiest and SP alike. Has anyone ever thought of what would happen if CERB were shut down? I mean literally, off the air. Having this board is a privilege not a right. It costs nothing to participate and we all gain from it, but it costs $$$, time, heart and soul to run it. This whole "democracy" issue should have never happened. Who has the right to question and complain about MODs decisions to begin with? It's his board, which means his game, his rules!!! He has the right to make decisions without backlash or complaint from anyone in any form. If you don't like his decisions, LEAVE. There are other boards out there for you to participate on. Don't like those, start your own board. To all of those who have pushed MOD to this, those who complained and pitched hissy fits, give your head a shake, grow up and get a life. You have brought this on CERB. It would serve all those involved if MOD decided to simply close up shop and move on to something that doesn't require hyperbaric sensory deprivation treatments to maintain his sanity. You know who you are. All of you who chose to PM him, giving him a hard time about bans and suspensions. All of you who question his decisions. All of you who take petty squabbles to him instead of being an adult and taking the high road. All of you who feel it's more important to be right than it is to be happy. Life doesn't always work out the way you want it to. Accept it and move on. For those who have been banned, take responsibility for your part in it and....move on. Perhaps if some apologies and self policing were implemented, this would all go away.
