I have moved to digital for almost all my music but have kept most of the CD'S, albums, tapes and yes... 8-tracks but that's mainly because I am a pack rat. I agree with you Roaminguy that thinking of our retirement ahead of time is our responsibility. But I wish that such financial matters were taught in schools in a serious way. I don't know about here in schools, but in France (where I grew up) it is not taught at all. Managing your bank account properly, doing a budget, understanding that paying bills on time works well for your credit, but knowing when to avoid using credit, how to do savings and investments, RRSPs etc... and prepare for life as well as retirement. Therefore, in Europe, a lot of people grew up and grow up thinking that saving or investing is for "others who already have money" or "rich people". There is a book that I really love that should be offered to any teenager. It is "Rich by Thirty (A young adult's guide to financial success" by Lesley Scorgie (Key Porter books, 14.95$). And it is of interest to anybody who has not a clue at all about all these financial matters that are so important. And don't get mislead by the title, the way it is written and presented is very wise and educational, not a recipe to become a millionaire as soon as possible, but to make understand people, especially young ones, that the sooner they start the better, how to do it, and how their lifestyle has an impact on their finances. And a person needs to retire when he/she is prepared, financially and emotionally to leave work. I don't think this is unusual. We have 2 yr program colleges that are far more intensive study and practicum in for example music, that UBC music grads would come to after their 4 years at university. i don't think one is better than another or better than not doing any formal education at all. It usually depends on what someone wants to get out of it and to do later. Sometimes it is about gaining some maturity, and being self directed to finish projects, papers, write exams. It can be about teaching self discipline. Expanding exposure to things (required reading is required for a reason lol) Technical or business college degrees might end up being more useful or transfer into work faster, due to some have closer ties with the local businesses. I have had some jobs where i would not ever have been hired without my diploma because it is a requirement in the job hiring description, along with other professional accreditations which i had to pursue on my own time. If i had wanted to be a poet, or writer of literature, or classical musician, i would have attended universtity, i do not think that higher education would be wasted for those who pursue those arts. i think those are the things that help train artists, & give them the skills to enable them to express themselves. You can have talent, but you rarely communicate it without technique, and technique is learned.

Or I guess it would be true to say that Canadian Universities get huge numbers of people College graduates who come to learn something that get them a career... I don't think this is or or be about one form OT education or training being better than another there are individuals in no formal education that succeed in amazing ways and different education and training are best for different careers. Learning either through form education at a University or college or trade apprenticeship programs or other more unique individual learning strategies is what allows you to develop and succeed. Is a for education right or needed by everyone no.... can a formal university education be instrumental in moving your career along yes...... lol but so could being at the right place at the right time. I guess there is really a need.

Life is funny at best. Some of us plan things - education, courting, marriage, kids, mortgage, career.. and then, ahh.. retirement. We work and work to provide for ourselves and family. Most of us plan to retire from work and start striking off bucket list items (travel, hobbies, etc). For many of us, life doesn't turn out as we "planned". Far from a straight line, our tapestry ends up looking like a figure-8. Then there is the old "live life to the fullest everyday" motto - again, for some of us, we're just trying to survive the day and start new the next day. There's the conundrum. Youth brings with it the health required for travel and other hobbies, but little in resources to execute. Age brings knowledge and wisdom (maybe) and perhaps more resources, but then our health begins to decline. At 47, I was forced into retirement (cutbacks from a previous federal government). But I was fortunate - still fairly healthy and had a few coins in the pocket.. no pension, but a few loonies in my RRSP. As with many things, I saw a silver lining. I get to sleep in until 7am on most days, I get to set my own schedule on most days. I volunteer with various organizations, so my mind and body are active. And the roof is still overhead and there's a table to put food on. While I can't afford to dine at Beckta every night, I can indulge in Swiss Chalet now and then.. and I go canoeing on the Ottawa River instead of taking cruises on the Mediterranean :-) I think the notion of "freedom 55" is outdated in 2016. But our western society depends on "older" folks to retire so that employable youth get a chance to start their adventures. Is it a social duty - yes, I think so - but 'mandatory' retirement by a certain age is becoming a dream for too many honest, hard-working folks. I'll be "retired" for three years next month. If I am careful with the finances, I should be ok. Fewer Starbucks lattés and more homemade coffee in a travel mug! Perhaps the "live life to the fullest" has more to do with attitude than the activity... CM

I am wondering if you are able to tell that they are newbies and possibly have little experience, or maybe no board handle, or if they sound like they know what they are doing but are being secretive and evasive and that's why they refuse to give it. I find there's those 2 types, those with no real handle to give, or if they have one they don't post and it tells you nothing about them and is kind of useless as a screening method. Unless there was more going on here then a strict Business relationship then I would have to agree with Carrie on this one I don't think there is any financial obligation to your service provider.... You are not paying her bills you are purchasing time and companionship from her so unless you have made other more specific contractual arrangement with her that's where it ends. Now having said that I would add that while I don't think there is an ongoing financial obligation I do think that if you have developed a regular and frequent schedule of bookings ie every Tuesday at 3 and you or her are thinking of ending or changing that arrangement then it should be brought up with the other party ASAP so that either party can plan accordingly.
