Restorative Justice works when ALL stakeholders in the process are involved. It is less focussed on the State imposing it's sanctions and more on the victim(s) and offender(s) mediating and coming up with some form of restitution that acknowledges the wrongdoing done. All the stakeholders must want to participate in this process And the goal is restitution that acknowledges the wrongdoing done. The goal is not how the offenders can remain in dental school. In fact the very real outcome of restorative justice in this case hypothetically speaking would be the victims agreeing with the police and Crown that they don't pursue any charges and in exchange the thirteen students agree to leave dental school and not attempt any career in a dental/medical profession Restorative justice doesn't mean restoring these thirteen men back to dental school as students and graduate them. It means restoring back to normal, as best as possible, considering the damage these thirteen men caused to their victims, without police/Crown laying charges and removing the possibility of these men serving time Just off the top of my head, and I'm not a lawyer, but it appears they could be charged with utter threats to cause death/bodily harm Or Criminal Conspiracy, or both. Mind you I'm no lawyer, I've only heard third hand about the FB postings. But the fear these thirteen students should have isn't graduating, it should be wondering if this is going to proceed criminally RG

I get this question from potential guests pretty often and I usually tell them to go with their gut. I know that I could be making more working independently, but not worrying about rent and keeping up another apartment, towel service, security measures, etc. means that I can focus all my energy on giving the best massages I can and building strong connections instead. Similarly, a lot of what Charlie Hebdo has published in the past looks pretty awful and tasteless to me. As many commenters are noting today as they examine Charlie Hebdo's back-catalog, the magazine had an inclination to take swipes at powerless minorities, when the usual targets for the weapons of satire are those too comfortable in their positions of power and privilege. But they seemed within the limits of French law, and if anyone disagreed then they could choose to bring a case. Some laws mandate that some kinds of speech should be outright curtailed in the public interest. You can't be a Holocaust Denier in Canada for example, or try to hold certain kinds of rallies in Germany, without facing legal consequences. Same thing for the Dalhousie students; you don't get to say anything you want, no matter how hateful, without accepting the consequences for the environment you have created, how you may have violated the standards required by your university, or for showing that you can't meet expectations of your future professional organizations. But any repercussions must be legal, and follow a process, and they most certainly can't involve being gunned down in your office. So even if some of what they published was dumb, ugly garbage, it's for the preservation of the rule of law that we should all stand beside Charlie Hebdo and against terror. Few things have made me smile wider than the huge crowd in France on the night of the shootings, with a big illuminated sign "NOT AFRAID".

Why is the onus not on them -- their actions are what caused this. If I were to plagiarize in my studies, there would be consequences. As a student, I know that this is unacceptable behaviour, and what the consequences are, which can include expulsion from my program. So, if I plagiarize, what then? Is it my professor or my faculty's fault that I am now unable to complete my degree? Are they responsible that I am going to have difficulties applying to another school/field? No, it's my own fault for behaviour that I knew what inappropriate and which went against the rules for my school. Where will they go? Honestly, my question is: what are they going to do? I haven't been following the story closely, but my guess is if they want to continue elsewhere, they are going to need to accept responsibility for their behaviour and work to prove that they have learned from this and can behave as mature, respectful adults.

Absolutely! There is clear legal obligation and liability regarding harrassment. If these students had been employees at my workplace they would have been fired already. Is it valid to wonder how many other "groups" around the world are communicating privately about potentially harmful things that would affect innocent people if one or more of the group decided to act? It kind of funny that someone could argue a breach of privacy based on such a flimsy argument of an agreement to join a private facebook group but want to ignore a written policy of the university (code of employee conduct) that they consented to when then applied to attend the university. Kinda self serving to only want to apply agreements that are in your favor. If they did not want to be held accountable under the code they should have not studied at the university. Again to reiterate, no one I believe is talking about criminal sanctions. The sanctions are administrative in nature (ie The Code Of Student Conduct) And this is not a lynching, no one is dragging these thirteen students out to a tree, and hanging them. If you want to call this a lynching be very clear then, students are to read the Code Of Student Conduct. They would know this sort of behaviour is not acceptable. If one wants to argue that terminating a person's career is akin to a lynching (I don't agree with this btw) then these students would be the cause (their careers haven't been terminated yet) of their careers being terminated. They knew of the Code Of Student Conduct yet chose to form a FB group to discus hate sex (rape) of some female students, a clear violation of the Code Of Student Conduct. So if one wants to argue they were lynched, didn't they really lynch themselves, or career suicide. They chose to put a hateful FB group membership ahead of becoming professionals. And as such they were the makers of their own demise RG

There is an SP Ashley that is also located in Saint John, and I believe she is part time/occasional aswell. I can not say anything about any of the SP "s in Saint John,as I have not met any of them personally nor do I go buy other peoples gossip! I have heard through the grape vine there will be a new strip club opening on the East side.. Hopefully I am hearing these rumors correctly.
