I can understand the sentiment that more testing = better policy, and that's true to a point. He says, "Oh, you're clean and I'm clean, can we do BBFS?" He assumes that her negative test means there's no risk for him, so he chooses not to use a condom because he mistakenly believes that the test would have informed him if there was any risk. What he doesn't realize is that there's a 3-month incubation period during which HIV isn't detectable by any test, and he ignores the risk of other STIs - such as syphilis, for example - because he's not worried about contracting HIV. It seems like contradictory logic, but the very fact that clients are concerned about STI risk from sex workers means they're far more likely to take proper precautions to reduce that risk on their own. Mandatory testing is not a good means for preventing the spread of STIs, and the UN didn't make that determination lightly - the evidence is very much in favour of not forcing mandatory STI testing on sex workers, not just from a personal perspective, but a public health perspective as well.

I remember one lady ( who has since left Ottawa) told me that she had disallowed digits after a client was too rough on her and left her off work for a week or so. Since then, I always remember to have my fingers filed and smoothed before the meetings. Washing the hands upon arrival is also a very good idea as Kathryn Bardot says above.

I agree with you, however, I also think we as clients are responsible for our choices. There is no solution that I can think of that will make everyone happy that is also economically viable. Enforcing existing laws about animal abandonment/cruelty would help reduce the number of new animals added to the feral population but proving that the animal didn't just "run away" could be problematic. The biggest problem/hurdle is likely the feral animal breeding population - even if 100% of owned animals were spade/neutered the feral population would continue to grow. For owned animals, Brad is on the right track but further burdening the taxpayer isn't the answer; "free" government programs often don't work the whey they were intended to - it's easy to bring a horse to water but it's hard to make them drink. There will always be some people that want to breed their animals (for sale) and those that think that one day they may want to. There will be many that just can't be bothered, even if it's free. If all pets require a license the license fee could be set such that the fee for a spade/neutered animal is substantially less than that of a breeder.
