Not sure if this has been posted BUT it is important. This is the actual process of how a bill becomes law in Canada. http://www.parl.gc.ca/About/House/compendium/web-content/c_g_legislativeprocess-e.htm So when you are fretting about Bill SeeDirtySex (C36) remember what was tabled on Wednesday is like a piece of cloth before it gets tailored into a suit. IT IS NOT THE FINAL PRODUCT. An all party committee will scrutinize the living shit out of the current bill. You can bet that more than one member will PUBLICLY suggest that the bill is absolutely contrary to the SCC decision and will suggest sending the bill or parts thereof to the SCC as a series of test questions. You know how the SCC has ruled - in unanimity. What can you do in the interim? Contact your MP. Demand a written response. Organize. Organize. Organize. If you are a part of a SW organization, enlist the support of human rights organizations. Have THEM speak on your behalf in concert with your own voice. Find SW friendly artists, authors, educators and other persons of note to advocate for you. Get Elizabeth May on board. Get the NDP on board. Get the Liberals on board. Don't get sidetracked on side issues. No tangents. You want to gain support NOT alienate. This bill affects both sexes. In the resounding words of Pierre Elliot Trudeau - "There's no place for the state in the bedrooms of the nation." That was nearly 50 years ago. Let's NOT go backwards. Just some food for thought.

Yesterday, I had a call from 411 directory. They wanted to know if my ad needed updates. I asked he was aware of the new bill that may be our new laws. I continued to inform him, he was greatly concerned and irritated by the whole thing. Not for his job or anything, as 411 has many other business to advertise for. He said he would speak to his supervisor about this, and what they plan to do with the escort category. He also said that he will do his part in writing to different offices, voicing his concern too. Hope that he does! I was happy to see that someone outside of my business and this bored to be genuinely concerned. I know is just one person on a phone, but gives me a glimmer of hope that others will also become more and more aware of this disturbing bill.

If I send a picture to a lady that I've met,or have had a mutual respect for, I will always ask firstly. It seals a bond of huge trust between each other, and that, I respect the most in this business and friendships. It is not about me showing off certain body parts of mine, as I'm not that buffed young looking lad, nope I'm just that mature early fifties gent, showing my face or my body to her is telling her "hey I value your trust, honesty and friendship" so here is a picture for you. I'm not feeling nervous,or invincible perhaps a little naughty, and yes I actually feel desired, happy, accepted, yes thrilled too when when she says "yes" It is about respect and a hint of naughtiness that sets a tone for a date. I had to send a photo to a companion down state side for her screening process, last fall, ever since then we still exchange emails once and a while to say hello, it built a very trusting SP and gent friendship and to me that is very important. I also like to believe that my photos are her property now, and she wouldn't share them, and that is a bond and trust that she must keep, so it has it's benefits for both involved.

Just wanted to say that after being on Cerb for 4 years and meeting many SP's and MA's over the years that I have learnt a lot about the women who have chosen the is path as a career. Most of them have chosen this career because they enjoy the independence and financial freedom that it can bring. But this job is not easier. Many of them have families or kids to support. University educations that they are trying to complete. This job is demanding as it involves many hours of marketing, emailing, posting ad's answering text and PM's. Trying to get hotel, schedule appointments. The women who are most successful at this job are the one's that truly enjoy their work and like to please their clients. I've met many of these women and have truly enjoyed my time with them time and again. This can be a stressful time as they need the time to prepare the room and prepare themselves for each encounter. Some day's it can busy and other day's not. Some day's they meet some really fun gentlemen and other days, maybe some creeps. Some have been robbed, or beaten up or cheated. Sometimes there no shows or other girls that make fake appointments. This is a hard job. Sometimes it is physically demanding. They give their most intimate moments. It takes a certain kind of woman to handle the emotions and sexual activities that this job may entail. One SP, told me that it's not the physical aspect that is tiring. But the emotional aspect. To be able to pretend to enjoy themselves when they are not. She was saying that in this job she had to be the giver all the time and that most of the men were takers. Her Job was to give them pleasure and most men just used her to get as much pleasure for themselves. These women deserve more, they deserve to be treated kindly and with respect. Respect their time and their contact protocol. Be a gentlemen and be clean. Do not try to negotiate their rates, or push them for more then they are willing to offer. Give them a massage to start, make it about them in the beginning. They may have had a hard day, and appreciated a little kindness and tenderness and relaxation. Talk to them, they are people also, not just objects of your lust. Treat them well and with respect and kindness. I've been told by them, that it doesn't matter how old or what you look like. As long as you are a gentlemen and clean, you will be treated well. Remember, that they are there to make you happy and are providing a very intimate service, so you should appreciate they company they provide. If the chemistry and connection are there, you will have a great time. If the connection is real, it pays to return for repeat sessions. I have repeated many times with many of the women, and have found that each session get's better and better, as you get to know each other and are more relaxed with each other. I have had several good friendships developed over the years and have maintained them. Just wanted to say this to thank you to the women of Cerb for the fun and kindness that they have given us men over the years. I hope to meet many more of you over the next few years if I can :) Remember guys. Be a gentleman, be clean and respectful and you shall be rewarded. Oh yeah, one more thing. The woman should always cum first :)

My answer right now would really have to be that I am unsure at the moment. I am still reasonably confident that reason will prevail and that this political foolishness will be withdrawn. If not, then I suppose as the saying goes, "Where there's a will, there's a way."

This one's a giant "Meh" at the moment. First, as has been said, nothing is law yet. Second, even if the bill becomes law unchanged... I'm wondering how many folks who quit initially will get bored of the company of their own right hands after a week, or a month, or whatever, and drift back...

I hate these discussions because essentially they all boil down to "it's a sex worker's choice who s/he sees." But if you're making race-based generalizations as your reasoning for why you won't see XYZ race, well you're being racist. Discriminate based on bad behaviour, not race.

One further thing that came to me over the last few hours. PLEASE engage the potential leaders that are vying to fill the position that Shawn Atleo left as National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations. This bill completely ignores the outcry of the First Nations in regard to the disappearances and murders of 3000 Aboriginal women. In fact, it further endangers the countless women who may fall or have fallen victim to creatures like Robert Pickton, many of whom were First Nations. The United Nations is investigating the disappearances and the unheeded call for government action to solve this horrible phenomenon. THIS BILL FURTHER JEOPARDIZES THE PLIGHT OF ABORIGINAL WOMEN. In an era where the Conservative government values international reputation as highly as it does, it certainly can't afford overt UN condemnation. More food for thought.

I agree completely with that. Not only aboriginal women but all of the women on the fringes of this business. I can never understand the politicians who hold themselves up to be the protector of certain vulnerable members of our society by creating policies that only drive those most vulnerable farther underground and putting them at greater risk. I guess it shouldn't surprise me, though. Most of these politicians are born with a silver spoon and don't really give a rats ass about the less fortunate, despite their proclamations from on high.

Regardless of the various interpretations of what is OK and what is not OK there will be an impact from today's announcement. Some won't stick around to find out what's what and will view it as too much risk and will split from the game both johns and providers. Peace MG

My reading , for what it is worth, says that Savannahs is correct. An independent is free to advertise. Agencies it seems would not. It would be a crime for anyone to communicate in any way with the independent about the advertisement but the advertisement it seems will be legal.
  43. 1 point
I like your analysis.... In my opinion I think the biggest risk is that the threat of criminal charges will cause some people who might gave seen an SP to be nervous and not proceed... this will restrict the market and make it much harder for SP who do not have established clients. Just my opinion

A few initial thoughts on this. Full disclosure: I've read Pivot's analysis of it, but not the bill itself (I've scanned the bill, and it's basically impossible to follow unless you're already familiar with existing legislation). Anyway... ...yes, it's bad, but I see no reason to panic. The sky is not falling, despite the government's wish to drop it on us. As Gia noted, this is not a final bill; it's an opening bid in a political process. Some provisions in there will be things the government really wants to make happen, but some will be stuff that's there purely to be negotiated away so that the government can claim they're being reasonable. Yes, the government has a majority... but negotiations will still take place and compromises will happen. An aside: given the government's current relations with the SCC, I can't help but wonder how much of this is less about sex work than Harper just wanting to deliver a solid "Fuck you" to the court. Obviously sex workers and their clients are just collateral damage here... On communication: it still talks about "any place", and the Internet (including email) is still not a "place". On advertizing: does the law prevent the hosting of ads, or just the placing of them? The former is completely unenforceable; contrary to what some others have said in this thread, anything outside of Canada is beyond the jurisdiction of Canadian courts, as are any servers physically located in another country and run by a non-Canadian company. So, to pick three more enlightened countries at random: if we set up cerb.de, hosted on servers in New Zealand by an Australian company, the courts here are powerless. And for those who disagree with me on that... think for a moment about Wikileaks. Think about Edward Snowden and Glenn Greenwald, and what they've published between them. Think about the stuff they've put online, and how much it has pissed off the most powerful and technologically advanced nation in the world... and on a subject far more important to The Powers That Be than sex work could ever become. Can they stop it? Can they shut those people down? Of course not, or they would have already done so. Given that, do you really think the Canadian government will be able to kill a board like this if it's hosted abroad, even if they were foolish enough to try? Now, if the placing of an ad is a crime... well, that's enforceable. But will LE have the resources and inclination to actually enforce it? Maybe, but that depends on the LE in question. And that only applies if ads stay the way they are today... if advertizing sexual services is illegal, then we simply do what's already common in the US: "Money exchanged is for time and companionship only (nudge, wink)." Problem solved: no sex advertized, no law broken. On the idea that this bill could kill the industry in Canada: well, I'm sure the government would love that to happen. But, really... look south. Even if this bill passed as written, the legal environment for sex work would still be less oppressive than that which exists in most of the US. Tell me, doom-mongers, are there no sex workers in the US? Are there no clients? And, bearing in mind the answers to those two questions, do you honestly think the industry will die here? It's called the Oldest Profession for a reason, and it's survived worse than this. Now, that's not to say there will be no effect at all. We may end up with a more US-like situation where providers have to be more careful about screening clients, and clients will have to be more careful about which ads they respond to, and newcomers on both sides of the fence will probably find it harder to get established. Some clients and providers may well be scared out of the industry, and it may decline in size as a result. But it will continue; I have no doubt about that. My gut feeling is that enforcement of whatever finally becomes law will, as today, be mostly aimed at street workers and their clients. Let's face it, this is about politics, and what drives politics is public opinion... and what drives public opinion is what the public sees. The man in the street probably doesn't know that the nice lady in the apartment upstairs is a sex worker, and therefore he won't complain to either LE or his MP about her; he's going to complain about the lady in the short skirt on a street corner, never mind the fact that she's just a random person meeting a friend for a night out and not a sex worker at all. Finally: as many have noted, this is all obviously going to be struck down by the SCC on the same grounds as last time, provided we can get plaintiffs for a test-case (or maybe two; it strikes me you'd need one case for the laws aimed at clients, and one for the laws aimed at providers). Sure, most people won't want the publicity... but it only needs one or two courageous and determined individuals. And a decade.

Books are AMAZING! It's a weird thing, it's either all or nothing with me. When I get into reading mode, it's all consuming. I will read a book a day for weeks on end... and then it stops as quickly as it starts. I consume the complete bibliographies of authors in a single period, much like tv series marathoning has become the thing. Recommendations? Ian Rankin - The inspector Rebus series and the Malcolm Fox series. (19 books and 4 books, two interlaced.) Rebus is a crotchety old Edinburgh cop with relationship and alcohol problems, he drives a crappy car and is often seen in yesterdays clothes... but you like him. The mystery series is fast paced and gritty but ohhhhh so good. Alan Bradley - The Flavia DeLuce series (6 books). If you loved Harry Potter, you'll love Flavia DeLuce. She's a precocious 11 yr old chemist/evil genius in a crumbling English manor solving crimes in 1950 England. Like Harry Potter, it's an all ages adventure that has moments for everyone... and best of all Alan Bradley is a Canadian author with enormous talent. Christopher Moore - The man is hilarious. His 15 books are filled with a compendium of the most interesting characters, in the most interesting of situations and some of the most inciteful humour you will ever read. His best is "Lamb, The Gospel according to Jesus's buddy Biff." Industry related? Michael Faber's - The Crimson Petal and the White. An amazing story centred around a London prostitute named Sugar. It's long, but if you are a true reader you won't be able to put it down. It has been adapted and altered as a 4 part mini series. The Game of Thrones/Song of Ice and Fire series by George RR Martin - You watch it religiously, read the books to see what happens in your head before you see it on TV. The books are long... and book four is not the easiest to read, but by the end of the 5th book you will truly appreciate the series even more. Just hope old George finishes all seven books before he kicks the bucket....
