In early September 2012, there was a point that I actually thought that post 5000 was never going to happen. In fact, I wasn't really sure that morning would happen, at least for me. Labour Day weekend is supposed to be eventful. It's when we say goodbye to summer and get ready for the colder months ahead. Pack away the summer stuff and bring out the long sleeves. Close down the cottage. Make plans for the air conditioner and the patio furniture. My labour day weekend began with a sense of draining. I had no energy. Walking was an effort. A shower required a nap after. Drying my hair took my breath away. I knew something was wrong, but my stubbornness said, "sleep it off, it's been a tough summer and you are just run down." It was more than that. I had a major heart attack. It was weird... no sudden chest grasping pain... just a sense of draining... like superman with kryptonite. That's when CERB stepped up. I mean it. CERB saved my life. Isabella Gia and Barrhaven Woody came over and took me to the hospital. They waited with me in the waiting room and stayed there until they knew I was being cared for. But it didn't stop there. I was in hospital for a week. Woody came to visit. Isabella came to visit and then came again with home cooked food. Cat and one of her kittens came to see me daily. Bethany, Phaedrus, Luxe and Alger all came bearing cups of coffee, muffins and most importantly, love. Alger left work early to come and pick me up at the hospital to take me home. When I got there, Boomer and Mister T had made food and left it in my fridge. Angela had gone to get my prescriptions. There were messages from Annessa, Nicolette, Gabriella, Samantha, EMB, Meg, Sara, Malika and Dorinda... and a very special message from Amelia ;) I was in tears. You have no idea how much I love my CERB people. It's more than that though. My CERB people are not just relegated to a small hidden part of my life. They are central. I am actually tearing up writing this... but they are happy tears... I have had so many visitors and so many messages It's hard to mention everyone... dammit. There are so many people that have made a difference and still make a difference in my life. You all make a difference whether you think so or not. So to everyone I have mentioned above and these few more, I give my thanks, my love and my friendship. If I missed a name it wasn't out of spite... it's because I am old. Anyhow... this thread is for you. You have made my life worth living in these past few months and years... you make me smile, you make me laugh and you make me want to share a bit of myself with all of you. And I am going to say it, unabashedly, unashamed and without any hesitation. I love all of you.

If we were any other culture, we would hail ourselves as the model of what a country should be... but we don't. We can't. It's not in our nature. We're Canadians.

After lunch my little girl comes out of her playroom dressed as a princess and says, "whoever wants to be my prince put up their hand". The room was full of people including lots of little boys so I never put up my hand and continued to sip my coffee. After a few seconds I look up and she's staring right at me and says, "daddy you forgot to put up your hand". I don't even know why what others do sexually has become a concern. I love the multicultural mosaic that Canadian metropolitan cities offers. Proud of Canadian hospitality, our low crime rates and our friendly smiles. I run a cat rescue. I spay and neuter stray cats, find homes for those that are adoptable, foster those that need more time. Get them used to people, furniture and life inside a home. I also have a small dog (well, a short dog). She is a Terrier, Chiuauwa, Shizt-zu, Poodle mix. I call her a Terry-Wawa-Chitz-Oodle. She is the keeper of all the cats. She loves them and keeps them in line. She has even nursed one of the kittens when mom weaned her, even though she had never had pups, she produced milk for this kitten. Well, I've had lots of dogs and cats come and go in my life. There is a sense of fulfillment in finding a home for an animal that might otherwise be homeless. At one point, I had 19 cats and dogs at home. A bit crazy, but everyone seemed to get along well. Right now, I have a dog and 3 cats. The oldest cat is a diva - she does not like other cats and will swat them away if they try to sneak up behind her while she is sleeping. The middle cat is a talker and very friendly. She is the one who nursed off the dog. These two cats love going outside and are great hunters. The kitten is a fluff ball who will come into bed and in order to wake you up will put her tail on your face and hit you with it to wake you up. You wake up with fur down your throat. She then looks back at you and says "oh, you're awake now? Awesome, can you feed me?". The three cats take turns waking me up to feed them. The stray cats outside are very patient critters. They are usually around, waiting for me to open the door in the morning to let the dog out. They come flying out of hiding and wait for their grub. I think that more people should have animals in their life. Even if only helping the shelters if you can't have one in your home. Meaghan xpxo

Well, my mother has finally reached the final stages of her long fought battle with cancer. I've been sitting on watch for the inevitable for the past couple of days. Coming to grips with it is harder than I imagined, even though we had a couple of years to prepare ourselves. Things that suck?...... Cancer. And, well mortality in general. Seeing someone you love wither away. To those of you who have lost loved ones to this horrible disease, or are faced with the prospect of doing so, you have my deepest sympathy.
