My apologies in advance. My post is long and a bit heavy, but a highlight for me today, nevertheless. I finally understand how important it was for me to spend a couple of weeks with my grandfather in Laura, Saskatchewan over fifty years ago. My grandmother had to go somewhere. My grandfather had suffered a stroke and needed someone to stay with him, just in case. We were living in Saskatoon, not far away. It was summer - a beautiful warm, dry Saskatchewan summer. I was twelve or thirteen, I think. I was the one who would be with my grandfather. I didn't understand then how important my presence could be. My grandfather had four children, including my mother, the eldest, and one son, Joseph (Joe), the youngest. Joe was very talented but quite wild around the edges - spoiled rotten, drank too much, chased skirts and ended up in the St. Lawrence River in his early thirties, with a wife and many children in St. John's, NL. I resembled Joe a lot. I would guess that my being with my grandfather comforted him greatly. We very much enjoyed being together. We exchanged very few words, but lots of connection. We would go for walks and collect beer bottles and mushrooms, which he would cook in butter. Yummy! In the afternoon he would smoke his pipe in his den, and take a nap. Beautiful, peaceful times! A lovely man, of few words, who lies buried now in Laura, with his wife, not far from where my mother and my father also rest in peace. Only tonight did I realize fully how good that time was for me, and probably for him :) bellafan

Here's my take on it. I don't fear any area of Halifax for my personal safety, but I don't want to have a great experience and come back to my car and find it broken into or missing. That would be a disaster I don't need. Safe, secure and if possible; discrete parking is a priority for me. I'm not leaving my car on Highfield park drive or Creighton st. Another proud "darksider" here. :) Lived in Dartmouth much of my life and am happy to do so. It is funny how many people from across the harbour act like crossing the bridge is entering a different country. You can get to downtown Halifax from Dartmouth faster than you can many places within Halifax itself! And yes, there are good and less reputable streets on both sides of the bridge. But as others have said, I put much more stock into the reputation and communication of a lady than any worries about location.

The thing about a city this size is that the nice areas and the. ....well less nice areas are often quite close together geographically so it helps to know the area. You will certainly find a lot of anti Dartmouth sentiment on the Halifax side. I think some of them were scared by a bridge as children which might explain their irrational fears ; ) It would likely be easier to entice a Dartmouth resident to the Halifax side than the other way around from a business perspective. Most Dartmouth people are used to traveling to the Halifax side. Just an observation. A generalization of course but seems to often be the case based on my own friends and family.

So true! My oh my what a change from 2001 till now! They had a hard time in learning how to have tourisim as their main economy. They only really began this 1995 . They have come a long way. But your adventure or lack of will greatly impact your views of this colourful country. Surely if you only stick to resorts and the buffett style eating you will probably be dissapointed. Get out there to the private in home reaturants and now you got some real good eats! Befriend your staff, bring gifts of razors and lotions and toys and you will be treated as royality. Also, there is not much differnece in the 5 star to the 3.5 stars. Only difference is the anount of entertainment and staff per persons. Other than that not much difference. Gotta be willing to see the good and not just pick on what is not perfect for your liking. Thats what adventures to other cultures are about!

Not as much of a concern about location if the lady I'm visiting has a good and well known reputation. There are a few areas I wouldn't visit if it was to meet someone for the first time. For example I wouldn't visit someone unknown if they were based out of Highfield Park area.

Don't know if this counts, I finally got up the nerves and went sunbathing at a clothing optional beach. There were only three other people naked when I got there but I joined them. It was kind is sexy or arousing to be sitting with my legs open and junior soaking up the sun especially when other clothed sunbathers walked by. I noticed a few of the younger ladies sneaking a peak when they casually walked by and when I got up to go cool off in the water. Although I was not hard I was in a semi hard state most of the time and it felt kinda nice.

I will make a few points, in no particular order to illustrate there are many ways to provide for retirement. I was downsized by a firm in 2000 and for various reasons never returned full time to the workforce. With the passing of my wife I officially considered myself retired. We always thought we would have a combined income in retirement, not to be. One decision I made during the nineties was to convert to a defined contribution from a defined benefit plan and control my own destiny. I have all my life invested 10 percent of my income in a stock savings plan. I have a reasonably sizable investment portfolio, so able to adjust my income every 5 years. I still max my TFSA. With longer life spans, I still invest in a less conventional strategy for my age, I'm 60% equity and only 40 fixed. The last thing I'm doing even though I live alone, is to maintain my home, which can be sold to provide an income at a layer date.

I'm not sure if I am changing the intent of this thread or not, but it is certainly related. Retirement is a big thing financially as has already been written about but also psychologically. I know a few individuals who were in high stress jobs that upon retirement were bored out of their minds. They found that they needed something to occupy their time, and regretted the decision. Another friend who had an amazing professional career went to work at the take out window at Tims and absolutely loved it. When I retired I figured that I could take a year and putter on my beautiful old home and property. Now here I am seven years later and still puttering and not the least bit bored and I am loving it. Life is short enough for some so for me to retire from a job that I truly loved was a wonderful decision. The passing of my wife two years afterwards and before she had decided to retire was a huge blow and I always now encourage people to retire when they can financially and take some well deserved time to relax and enjoy. As for CPP I took it at 60 because I have no vibes that I am going to live past the break even point. Not morbid, just a bird in the hand sort of thing. :)

For those interested (yes you should get a annual CPP report from them) OR go online to Service Canada then you can log on using your own financial bank, create your log in security questions, and voila you can see all your past history of contributions to CPP. That said, yes the link I posted was dated however when you read what happened to poor George at that magical age, his job loss it seriously makes you think about key issues on how Service Canada can f*** a individual over after putting all those years into a job and contributed to CPP. I'm not telling anyone how to organize their retirement and I hope everyone that hits the magical age, do research. I did what was in my best interest, I asked my financial planner. BTW I still have 5 years and 10 years before those ages to collect, just goes to show you are never too young or a little older to plan for your future. Yes I wanted that freedom 55 and I'm still at it because it is difficult to not work (I took off 6 months and hated it, but loved the travel, I like to keep busy) and being able to sweeten the retirement pot. ;)

Yes you are making my point exactly... the devil is in the detail of the individual situation... If you plan on using it simply on consumables and not investing and you factor inflation as a constant the basic math is spot on. But if you factor in the realities that... ie. if the money is needed earlier just to pay rent ( a consumable) or that you plan to invest it in an appreciable asset then you have to look beyond the basic numbers.

I am so happy when a client who is coming over asks beforehand if they can use my shower. It is important, I like someone clean. Most come directly from work (i.e construction workers) and it's nice how they clean up before we engage in anything. Shower fun is also enjoyed. Some want to just step in quickly and out.

Well then you wouldn't like me because unless we have met before, I would be counting the money at the beginning of the session. When I would encourage you to relax and undress, etc. I would do it in such a way that it was not the sole focus in that moment. And yes, in the end, getting paid is is what it is about. It is a business transaction and that doesn't mean we don't choose our clients based soley on them compensating us or that we don't enjoy ourselves or feel an interpersonal connection. But at the end of the day, we are paid companions and no matter how you want to slice it, us not counting the money in front of you does not take away from that. It rarely happens, but I have had gents give me the incorrect amount or Canadian Tire money and even overpaid (especially when the new bills came out). There is nothing that will spoil my mood more than discovering after the client leaves that I was short-changed.
