I've had a few people ask me what I think about the proposed legislation. Of course I'm upset at the disrespect and disregard that Pete, Steve and the cons have shown towards sex workers placing them in greater danger than ever before under the guise of protecting our communities, how friggin noble. How safe are those communities going to be with dead prostitutes in them ? Those who know me well know that I use humour as a coping mechanism. This is what I think about the whole sorted mess. Joy Smith is a powerful and influential MP, do not underestimate her. She says things like "The Criminal Intelligence Service Canada estimates a single Canadian victim of sex trafficking is worth approximately $280,000 per year to her pimp. This is big money, and our youth are their targets." People read that and think every SP is making $280k for a pimp. Speaking on bill C36 "This is a blow to the many brothels masquerading as massage parlours that saturate our communities" Parlours are in big trouble. Smith is very good at painting a black and white picture: ALL prostitutes are victims, ALL customers are exploiting them.

I'm not sure that this is the best indicator on which members to focus on. There are many reasons MP's do not vote on bills. It COULD be that they don't support it or it could be they had other things to do. Bottom line is the Conservatives have a majority. I doubt any Conservative would put their political life on the line for this Bill.

Anecdotes are not acceptable as 'facts' or proper research under any other circumstances, why are they treated as final word in this circumstance. There are plenty of anecdotes regarding how sex work is not harmful as well, so why are those being ignored? I think also it would be imperative to find out what evidence they are actually using, if any :) Additional Comments: Why didn't they vote? Are they just not there? I know Libby Davies wanted to be for the debate, but had committee she had to be in instead. That is a LOT of NDP mps, that vote could have easily been defeated with only a few votes.

I'd like to see them knock off the use of 'johns' to refer to clients of sps. For one thing, it diminishes the real business relationship to put a stimatizing label on what is a financial transaction. In any other situation, you would be called what you really are: customers, clients, etc. Plus, to me, it is the fact of the money that levels the field in the sexual services transaction. Some men are able to coerce sex out of an employee they work with, who works under them. They are trying to equate sp/client transactions in the same way, that the fact of it being sex is what makes the imbalance. The start with a false premise, that there is imbalance like there would be in a sexual harrassment situation, but that is false because this is a situation where the services are already being offered, for a fee. Failure to pay the full fee or any fee, for services provided, is imbalance, but anything under the terms and conditions required by the sp is not. it is interesting the article was posted today, and now has over 600 replies lol. Why did they ask everyone except sex worker rights organizations? I think, Lowman and Atchison both need to be heard at the committee meeting. They have relevant info, the church lady groups do not. Nor do any abolition organization, because they are not on the front lines. A few years ago, the Real Women organization was one of 16 organizations invited to speak to a senate committee on prostitution. That group has absolutely no connection to sex work, not even in the realm of 'rescue'.

My best friend's mom works in our local MP's office. So I'm giving you folks a heads up. First: Some of you are posting letters here that you plan to send...I will tell you right now that the MP is not going to read them. First, they will be screened by the MP's staff. It's all relative I think, some guys on here won't care and kudos to you, and I'll enjoy reading your recos but for some it's a big issue. I think for myself that I would have to think long and hard about continuing. I do have lots that I want to do in life and I would hate to have to jeopardize my future with getting caught. I would have to see how things play out. But if caught by the police it will be much easier for them to charge you with a crime and maybe end up on the sex offender's registry (possibly)... Something I would never want! Yes I think the cops will have bigger issues than catching "pervs" but to not think they will set up stings or entrapment of people, is living in a bubble. Well, the criminal record part doesn't worry me too much. But that's just me. I think the big thing here is what some have already mentioned. The enforcement of the law. The government will toss a little money at it and in the short term, police will step up the presence on the street side and at questionable agencies where under age girls could be involved. The "Johns" will get busted and the Tories and religious right wing will be singing the praises and twisting their arms patting themselves on the back. Over some time, however, the resources won't be there for L.E. and prostitution in this country will be like everywhere else in the world. Supposedly illegal to buy sex but most cops just looking the other way other than in circumstances where it is blatantly being exposed to the general public. All these "morality" laws are just made to appease the do-gooders who don't want to see it. Honestly, I truly believe if you were to sit down privately with most cops, they probably aren't too much in favor of this legislation. It just creates extra work on an already heavy workload. That's just the way I see this going. Sex has been "for sale" since the dawn of human history. I doubt this will have a great impact in the long term. I also doubt the cops will be targetting touring or discreet SP's and their clients as much as the guys picking girls up off the street corner. Having said that, any decision I make about continuing this hobby or not will be based on many other factors, not this one.
